Despite their CEO, https://kagi.com appears to be the current best/only option for search.**

👎 Google search is not the solution.

👎 Bing search is not the solution.

👎 DDG (it's just Bing) search is not the solution.

If someone finds a reasonable alternative that isn’t Google, Bing, or DDG, then I am all ears because I have no loyalty to Kagi.

** - I'm annoyed by this and their occasional Brave API usage, but this is also not an invite to pile on. https://mastodon.social/

@webology i can't stomach the monthly price for the two of us here so I stopped using it.

Question for friends, when do you pivot into multiple vaults?

My main vault has 100s of docs in it now, and most are from my micro blogging and random projects.

This seems to work fine, but it kind of blew up on me while trying to use my iPhone and iPad to take notes and write on the plane.

I re-synced everything sooner than later, and the writing experience was 💯 on the flight back, but it was a no-go on my flights to Pittsburgh.

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@webology personally I keep just one for myself and work related since a lot of my notes can sometimes span the spectrum.

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@webology I know of people having 10k+ notes in a single vault. i wonder what blew up. Are you using their sync or icloud?

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@webology That's kind of concerning IMO. I would never expect that with 100s, maybe 10s of thousands but it really should only be syncing your modified files and maybe plugins. Could it be a plugin that's causing problems? I know the plugins have cause a lot of iOS issues in the past.

Taking my new (to me) ThinkPad 450 out for its first stroll. Using it while waiting for the car to be serviced. , , , all working like a charm. Keyboard and touchpad are almost perfect, battery life is super long. Screen is a little dim but hey. For under $100US I'm not complaining. This is exactly why I got it and set it up with linux, etc. Oh, also doing some journaling with and it seems to be syncing to my home computer with . Just about perfect!

The frustrating part to all this LLM hype, is that buried beneath the gold rush, snake oil and wacko stuff going on, there’s something actually interesting with them as a tool to expand your toolkit.

Approaching it with critical thinking and understanding, I have generally found them to be useful to brainstorm with. Not something that replaces the work, but something that can be used to help you think a little differently, seems to be the best of approach right now. IMHO, of course..

greg,

@mako I completely agree. You will find this talk interesting

I’ve tried many search engines over the years and I’ve always ended up going back to Google.

But the latest with AI overviews has me running for the hills.

What’s everyone jumping too?

This week: Using paper for finance tracking has been invaluable for helping me understand the process, shaping my Markdown budget trackers into a text-based, hands-on envelope budgeting approach. Simple calculations mean I can take charge of my incomings and outgoings without a standard spreadsheet.

I have my Siri set to South African English, because the other voices tend to give me strong uncanny valley vibes (the Irish one damn near gave me a panic attack the first time I tried it), and it’s very fun to listen to South African Siri pronounce certain words. , for example, becomes more like ‘Bahlti-MORE’. ‘Chartreuse’ is a pretty good one, too.

@joshourisman Siri pronounces my son Brodey as Broderoy. wtf

Spent way too much time today trying to figure out why consult-imenu will not work for me in and made zero progress.

Last night I had to tear down my configs for tree sitter because typing / in a js buffer would crash emacs. At least I got that fixed and can work on react code tonight.

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@bignose I think in your case it’s a matter of getting the lsp to see your dependencies. For python i pip install the lsp into each projects venv which is added to the path in emacs

greg,
@greg@gregnewman.io avatar

@bignose but yeah. I have problems with JavaScript lsp and dependencies
