Matrix certrainly has its rough edges, but I find it awesome that pretty much every major Linux community now has their dedicated space. All federated, of course.
@iamdtms@angedestenebres ironically when i click on that screenshot and it pops out in firefox everynow and then the whole screen flashes, only time it does it. anyone else seeing this?
Currently deciding which #Linux distro to install besides #Windows on my laptop. I want to switch back to Linux for #programming (had to switch to Windows for work). I have used #Ubuntu and #LinuxMint in the past. Any suggestions?
I jumped ship and hopped over to the Linux Mint crowd. I used Pop_OS for ~3 months and it was an overall good experience on my ThinkPad X1 Gen 8.
But I always liked the Cinnamon desktop as I have used Mint for over a year before. And I didn't want to be part of the Rust-based re-invented desktop experience (COSMIC) driven by a company. Ultimately I believe that Linux is and should continue to be a community effort. Also, there were some minor annoyances (like the Pop_OS store eating up 1.2 GB of RAM all the time even when it is not running, an issue System76 is aware of for quite a while). And also, Snap.
If feels good to be back to a trusted distro whose maintainers generally make the right decisions (i.e. removing Snap).
Linux Mint monthly news suggests that "6 million people" have installed the (unverified) Google Chrome flatpak from Flathub.
No, the number is nearer 200K.
Don't confuse "installs" with "devices". It's around 200K devices (which typically will be people) and 6 million downloads of software updates or clean installs.
All very good numbers, but not the same thing. By an order of magnitude. Super (intentionally?) misleading.
Looking forward to setting up my used #thinkpad with #linuxmint next week. Looking for recos for easy syncing, mainly for my #emacs and #orgmode stuff. What have you used that you could recommend? I do have GDrive working well on my Windows machines, so could go that route,, though not familiar with how to do that on linux. Thanks!
Dragged out at old Intel i3 NUC computer (2012 era) from the back cupboard. After replacing the faulty mSATA drive, and getting wired keyboard, installed Linux Mint. I’m impressed. It runs very well considering the age of the hardware and I have even been able to access it via ssh on my iMac. Might see if I can get it running as a web server. It’s years since I tried Linux of any kind, but Mint feels very polished. The messages are very geeky and I'm still not a fan of Nano!
Looking for some solid recos for how to use #gparted on #linuxmint on a dual boot machine (Win and LM). I want to expand the linux space but really don't want to screw up the drive(s). Can anyone steer me towards some clear instructions -- video or whatever. I've googled but don't want to just try anything. TIA.
After a few weeks on #linuxmint, I have to say I'm loving the experience. And I'm probably their target audience. Longtime Microsoftie. I don't hate Windows, and I've gotten used to it all through the versions and find it easy to use. However, there's something fresh about the LM experience. And #emacs just runs fast. I'm def sticking around for a while.
Calling on #linuxmint#linux people who can help with dual boot situation and OneDrive syncing on Windows. Trying from LM to access my Windows documents folder. I can see the folder, called OneDrive in the terminal, but it's colored in red. Which I assume means I can't get to it. And when I try to cd to that directory, I get an error saying that it doesn't exist. I know that is the path as it appears in Windows. I'm getting closer! Thanks for any suggestions.
Hi all. I've got an older #computer running #Windows10, and I'm thinking about putting #Linux on it since I've always wanted to try it out and think this computer might run better with Linux. I read a topic on audiogames.net about Linux #accessibility, and I saw a few recommendations for #distros to try out. To any #blind Linux users, is #NixOS a good one for a beginner, or should I try #LinuxMint or #Ubuntu? Also, what's the best way to install Linux and replace #Windows? Thanks. #technology#tech@mastoblind@accessibility@main
@RareBird_15@mastoblind@accessibility@main I am using #LinuxMint myself for many years, and yes, the performance is considerably better than with Windows. However, I am sorry to say, that accessibility for blind people, i.e. lacking support for screen-readers for the desktop and pdf-readers may be a show stopper for you. If anything, try the newest distributions with gnome or kde. It would be great if you could share your experience.
@RareBird_15@mastoblind@accessibility@main#linuxmint or #lmde are solid choices if you come from Windows. Once you feel comfortable there, try a few other desktop environments to see what feels good. Check out #Ventoy to make a single USB boot up multiple distros without having to reformat the USB.
