Random thought I had today: maybe I'm done with “the whole world is here" scale social stuff. Maybe I'm ready for "dinner party" scale and that's alright.

hl,

@kpl I think that's my approach, it seems more genuinely social. 'Dinner Party' sounds good, which reminds me, can you pass the salt and pepper please?

Tiny websites have always fascinated me, along with internet web portals (which haven't been a thing for many years-- at least in the way we used to know them). I'm talking a simple HTML page with just a graphic or two, and a bunch of links. Something that might resemble the early days of Yahoo, etc.

The idea for this site I made has been buzzing around in my head for a while now. It is NOT responsive, there is NO JavaScript, and there's just a TINY bit of CSS. The whole site (one HTML page) is only about 9kb!

A simple site like this one might look primitive compared to some of the huge, complicated websites we see as standard on the internet today, but this site is guaranteed to work on any browser or device.

I used links for sites/documents that I frequent or use a lot, and mixed in my own personal projects for fun. It's a super simple page-- mostly for my own usage. But I really love the design of it!

I call it 'Mr Beamer's Old Timey Web Portal' 😂

EDIT: I moved it to Neocities! ⬇️

Search on Mastodon is lousy.

  • I think Protonmail is down.
  • I do a search for ‘Protonmail’ and it shows only mentions of it from my instance…
  • …a single post, by me recommending the service, three weeks ago.

Federated search needs to happen sooner rather than later.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@tldr @bazurk @jeannie Yes, my feed looked like it was deliberately trying to annoy you with this. I think federated search is probably a huge technical problem, but I would have thought local search on your instance would be very useful.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@tldr well I just saw this two posts down my local timeline from @bazurk
https://social.lol/@bazurk/110311376618960117 which at the very least you'd hope a search would find.

Either way, it does look like they're having issues.

I know that a lot of folks in my line of work enjoy hating on Jira, but I’ve been spending more time in it recently than I have in a good number of years, and I have to say, I kinda like it.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@petebrown @mcg I'd advise anyone who doesn't like Jira to try VersionOne for a month, and then see how they feel. Side effects include hair loss due to being pulled out in frustration and loud screaming.

Apropos of nothing: wouldn't it be terrifying if on your first day of work at a new job you were forced to wear a huge, glitzy and sparkling hat. Like the campest, most over the top thing you could think of, but with extra sparkles. Everyone would be staring and saying "Hey, it's the new guy!". Real nightmare fuel there for the socially awkward amongst us.

hl, to random
@hl@social.lol avatar

I think that is great, and being able to use my preferred formatting for posts awesome, but I have to admit, the combined markdown for links is perhaps a /little/ over the top e.g.: [[{{< relRef other-page-name >}}][Link Text]]
I almost feel sorry for the round brackets who somehow weren't invited to this bracket fest, but perhaps the round brackets were already occupied keeping my running.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@galdor Yeah, I can understand how all the individual elements got there, just in sum it looks awful. If I was smart I'd write a function that inserted Hugo links, and had completion suggestions based on the the content of the Hugo project's pages/bundles in the /content/posts directory.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@svw Thanks, might work, but normally when they're processed from .org into .md and then html it's all done by Hugo, so I think it's dependent on Hugo's parser being able to interpret the shortcodes, and not Emacs. Normally the unwieldy syntax is hidden in the orgmode link, I think I just want a function that inserts that, with the ability to complete from a list of directories.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@nickanderson Yes, I just write a .org file instead of a .md file in the page bundle directory, in the background Hugo then does the conversation using https://github.com/niklasfasching/go-org I think. ox-hugo may be superior, but this saves me an extra step, and means the site can be built remotely using just Hugo and cloning the git repo I keep it in.

I’m spoiled to the point where a beach feels crowded if I can see more than 10 people on it.

But if I can see no one for literally miles? Now I’m uneasy because it looks like the set of a post-apocalyptic movie. 😬
