Damon Thomas is a sixth-generation Floridian who grew up on the banks of the Suwannee in rural Dixie County, FL. A kid there once burned down the Scout Hut. An old log cabin in the Cross City park. When asked why he just said that he was bored. All from the area could relate. Small town boredom. Rural gloom. Damon has released 20 Spoken Word albums & 7 books on life in that Southern Gothic setting. #SouthernGothic #writing

If you get mad when you see employees at a business you are patronizing laughing, enjoying each other's company, and goofing off, you're a dick. Empathize with people working a shitty underpaid job, and let them enjoy what little fun they get.

@RickiTarr It's odd to me as fellow GenXers complain here. Considering our workdays were not quite as organized as what you saw on Clerks/Mallrats.

It all happened so suddenly. But these things always do. I had volunteered with a church youth group because I knew how boring small town summers could get for a kid. And now I was to be a guest preacher one Sunday. No notice. No training. Just head up there and see what the Holy Spirit has to say. It went about as well as you might expect. A 20-minute Andy Kaufman meets Jesus bit that was recorded for those would couldn't make it. "The Building Decayeth" is why I've never ran for office with any atheist group. I know that tape will pop up in oppo research.

"The Building Decayeth"

In my teens I volunteered with the Youth Group at Rock Sink Baptist church in the First District area of Old Town, FL. A van traveled unmarked limerock roads picking up kids. During the long pre-Internet summers in rural Florida most were just happy to get out. The usual schedule of touch football and Little Debbies was disrupted with talk of a "Youthquake." The next Sunday service… 4 days away… would be run by us kids. I was selected to be the preacher. Asking for advice on how to prepare I was told that "the Spirit would guide my words…" What followed was 20 minutes of nervous laughter.
Fumbling through the Bible I read Ecclesiastes 10:18 (KJV) "By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through" to a few muted cries of "Amen." This ended my career as a Spirit-filled backwoods preacher. I was never asked to preach again. I did realize that in the future I should probably actually prepare as I was going to speak in public.

"Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We’ll need writers who can remember freedom—poets, visionaries—realists of a larger reality." – Ursula K. Le Guin

"The idea for the film (Video Violence [1987]) came about one afternoon when a young mother with her children asked if the film I Dismember Mama contained any sex. Cohen informed her that he was unsure about the film's sexual content but that he knew it contained graphic violence. The woman decided to rent the film, telling Cohen that as long as the film were devoid of sex, she considered it appropriate viewing for her children." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Violence

Yes, very few people make a living doing art, and even fewer make a living doing the art they want. Maybe this is just me, but it seems like there's something about art that is anti-fascist and anti-capitalist. Authoritarians fear self expression, arts always seem the first to go when things get more conservative, and yet it has never stopped us. If they take everything away, we will draw on cave walls with charcoal from a fire, make dolls of corn husks, carve bones into beads, make bowls of mud, write stories in blood, make musical instruments out of anything, we will remember our history through song. We will pass these things down as evidence that we could never completely be silenced, we were here, we matter.

@RickiTarr It might not make a living but creative works make for a nice life. Through writing I've made friends and been invited to parties. Traveled for special events. Once I wrote about losing all my old photos and was showered with old photos people had saved. All more than money alone could buy.

I pitched the idea of a mastodon comic anthology a bit ago. This got a good response. And as an avowed indie DIY type.. that means it's time to make a book! If you'd like to contribute 1-4 pages of comics to me via DM. These can be published elsewhere already as long as you retain rights to do so. You'll retain all rights in any dealings with me. (Creators > Publishers!) 300dpi or better is nice for printing. We'll get everything together with an intro and a nice cover. Provide a PDF to all and distribute via Amazon at print cost. Deadline: 5/1. Any questions? Just ask!

Kurt Cobain died 30 years ago today. His death upset everyone I knew. In my case the timing was bad. I headed into a big test in low spirits. Our lives are shaped by countless events. And poverty leaves little room for error. @BlunderBusted captured the feel of it all in our new comic "Southern Gothic Children's Book." Leaving school behind and walking ahead into the unknown – "Good Luck '94." We had to find our own way. I'd start trying to write about my rural youth while at that community college. And now I have whole books.

Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

@RickiTarr When I was a very young kid my family found a taxidermied Roadrunner. For whatever reason.. I was terrified of it! Nothing like the cartoons. Seeing I was scared of it you'd think they'd put it away? But no! Instead they started placing it on anything they wanted to keep me away from. A step stool, a shelf covered in ceramic "what nots" etc. This went on until I decided to toss a ball at this bird. A hit! But it also broke a shelf of tacky 70s ceramic things as well.

I have a high school reunion coming up. Now as I understand it those mostly exist to show past jerks you are doing better than they are now. But in my tiny rural hometown school's case many of the worst guys are just sort of pitiful now? Very beat up. So I'll likely just share a shirtless photo in the planning group chat and stay home.

@matthewconroy The original feels like more of an experiment than a composition. So the oddness is seeing any attempts at a "faithful" cover.
