Big news for an avid SF reader!

@gregeganSF 's new book Morphotrophic is out and can be purchased as a DRM-free epub from: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1541765

I got mine already, and you should get yours! :ablobcatwink:

Can't wait to begin reading it later today.

Placed an order for a new ! I've long wanted to go back to headless guitars, and after playing for a few years I decided to stay with them and get a Neck-Through 7-String Vader.

Configurator doesn't allow HSH pickups with neck through, but this is what I got on my order over phone. Partly because of the Easter discount, but also because I enjoyed single pickups on the Ibanez Ichi.

Build times for Kiesel are currently 14-18 weeks, will report when it is completed!

Whoa, it is my second run (after a 2 year hiatus), but fighting Maliketh was as a hard as I remembered it. Here's my almost botched attempt that nevertheless succeeded: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn2WCfTGs5s

(Obviously I died like 30-50 times before getting there)

@developit @janl I still don't fully understand how one could use something like this efficiently and musically. Setting it up during the tour must be painful as well.

@developit @janl if I remember correctly they were tuned to specific notes, but it still sounds like too much to me

My first physics stackexchange question in quite awhile: https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/808302/inverstion-matrix-as-parallel-transport-in-cft

Ammon/Erdmenger’s take on CFT is really confusing to me. They seem to only review the material which is partly the reason. However, my previous exposition to CFT appears to be different from what they discuss, and I can't make any sense of the ideas presented. Hope someone will come across the question and help me out!

I so love it when case insensitive search in pdf finds both "Ω" and “ω” when searching for either.

look at this image and tell me you don't believe there's other life out there. every single point of light in this photograph is an entire galaxy with billions of stars. and this isn't even all of them. there are trillions of planets in the universe, and you're telling me this is the only one with writing and music and sex and feelings?

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

@nornagon I mean. Maybe, but the question is when? The lifespan of civilizations is orders of magnitude shorter than the scale of cosmic events. It wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to stipulate that even ecosystems don’t live that long.

This is maddness.

Passive js middleware can't do anything for the response except return it or pass control to the next middleware. They usually only modify the request.

So you hijack the writeEnd function of the response and do your maddness there!?

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

@reconbot Honestly, it surprises me that people still do monkey-patching in JS outside of debugging. Either create an explicit interface for overriding methods, or just don't?

On the note of Paul-Chani relationship it was funny that Feyd-Rautha kissing the Baron was more passionate that any scene between Chalamet and Zendaya.

Watched Dune Part 2 yesterday. It was pretty decent (except maybe the complete absence of any chemistry whatsoever between Paul and Chani), but the big surprise was that they fit in the rest of the first book into a single movie? I honestly was prepared for a third movie to cover it, but it sounds like they are going to rush it since they already casted Anya Taylor-Joy for Alia who doesn't get much time until book three?

Hah, translating Japanese poems to Russian made me flex my language comprehension way more than I anticipated. Studying Japanese exclusively in English apparently locked it out of the Russian part of my brain. Still, I'm pretty happy with the result even if I'm only going to share it with my relatives.

This Physics StackExchange answer is pure gold: https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/203944/why-exactly-do-sometimes-universal-covers-and-sometimes-central-extensions-feat

I was wondering why we often arrive at universal covers and central extensions of the symmetry group, but the answer explains it so succinctly that I wonder why I haven't encountered it before! (Maybe I did, but forgot :( )

I think I’m hitting limits of ObservableHQ Framework with my 50k datapoints. I might need to consider writing my own UI once I get to full 96k point data!

Level 13 of !

I'm about to get my first burned items (radicals from Level 1), so technically I should be around the peak of number things that I need to keep in short term memory at the same time! With that in mind, I had what I think of as, a "restructuring" week. A lot of kanji/vocabulary has similar pronunciation so had to slow down to 10 new lessons per day and make a lot of mistakes, but all to get a more solid picture of kanjis!

Not really a update, but still a notable one!

I just got a 365 day streak on BunPro.jp !

indutny,

Level 28 of !

I'm very glad that has introduced a new setting to set the total amount of lessons per day (in addition to batch size). Switching from 10 to 12 lessons per day resulted in subjectively higher error rate and bucket sizes, and looking back I don't believe it was sustainable.

Comparing my bucket values to the last level I see that they are not much worse, but it felts way more intense!

As a positive aside, it became easier to converse with my teacher!

Level 29 of ! Yay!

10 lessons per day works wonderfully. I didn't expect that 20% difference would put as much as strain on me as it did, but 10 seems to be just right for a balanced study.

I feel like I'm getting much comfortable with reading text in Japanese, because I know much more kanji now! In fact, during one of the lessons I didn't know the meaning of the word, but teacher dared me to guess it based on kanji and I managed!

Buckets are still recovering, but are good!
