Hey, fellow San Francisco tech workers. Is this what you want people to think of you? Is this how you think of other people? No? Then make sure you’re against these assholes, and think twice about voting for anyone they’ve funded. The cold that I got earlier this week didn't yet relent, and I feel bad enough that I'm considering watching Rebel Moon Part 2. Please send help 😅

(jk, it's not that bad rn, but if it gets there - I'll share what it was like watching it)

Looked at maybe doing some coding today. Realized I’m still too sick to do coding.

Day 7 of this cold today. Not bad enough to actually be a hindrance. But not good enough that I can do the work I should be doing.

Love the LLL application in a seemingly unrelated context:
https://github.com/spawnmason/randar-explanation/blob/master/README.md

Last time I had to deal with LLL was when I was re-deriving the GLV basis for secp256k1. One day I'll actually fully understand how LLL reduction works, but probably... not today :ac_joy:

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

...FWIW, I did implement it in JS 10 years (!) ago: https://www.npmjs.com/package/lll-reduction

@janl @thisismissem semi-offtopic, but what’s STF?

I didn't really enjoy "The Three-Body Problem" book. Partly due to Deus ex machina that the author pulls to explain the mystery introduced, but mostly because it was completely toothless and pointless in the light of serious topics that it brought (especially the Cultural Revolution).

For whatever reason I had I decided to give the Netflix show a try, and... it is also pretty terrible, IMO! The first scene was directed rather well, and the acting was top notch (except for the girl…

@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

...the girl who kills Wenjie's father.

As we moved further into the present time acting devolved into recitation of lines around colliders and reproducibility in physics, and mentioning god in every other shot.

Am I surprised at this? Probably not. Am I surprised at it being popular and discussed over internet? Quite a bit!

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

...it is funny how the script writer chose religious thematic to be a counterpoint for the failing science, and this might even make sense in TV show (even though it wasn't in the book). Why did they have to lay it so thick, though? Was it important to make half of the cast refer to it in roughly the same phrases in the first 10 minutes of the episode?

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

@reconbot haha, well... don't trust me! I'm heavily biased when it comes to movies and TV.

Level 13 of !

I'm about to get my first burned items (radicals from Level 1), so technically I should be around the peak of number things that I need to keep in short term memory at the same time! With that in mind, I had what I think of as, a "restructuring" week. A lot of kanji/vocabulary has similar pronunciation so had to slow down to 10 new lessons per day and make a lot of mistakes, but all to get a more solid picture of kanjis!

indutny,
@indutny@fosstodon.org avatar

Level 29 of ! Yay!

10 lessons per day works wonderfully. I didn't expect that 20% difference would put as much as strain on me as it did, but 10 seems to be just right for a balanced study.

I feel like I'm getting much comfortable with reading text in Japanese, because I know much more kanji now! In fact, during one of the lessons I didn't know the meaning of the word, but teacher dared me to guess it based on kanji and I managed!

Buckets are still recovering, but are good!

Level 30 of !! Big milestone, although I'm not quite out of the "Death" level yet.

10 lessons per day still works best for me, and it feels like a decent progress was made! 154 new burned items, and master/enlightened is roughly where it was. Given that it has been 16 days I guess I'm burning items with 96% accuracy. However, my review sessions are around 90% most of the time, which is curious.

Got a bit of a progress on grammar as well, even learned an N1 point! (なりに).

Steady progress, not much to report! Buckets seem healthy, and I learned quite a lot of kanji that I already encounter while reading.

Exciting!
