so, every ~6 months or so, my verizon fios internet connection stops working, and i talk to a robot for ~8 minutes, it reboots something on their end, and it works.

10 years ago, i would have spent 30 minutes on the phone, talking to a human who would do the same thing.

but, โ€ฆ why do i have to call at all?

@bwaber yeahโ€ฆ i've long thought those mid-tier expensive schools should be on the way out, and i've long justified "well, at least a computer science undergrad who pays $300k for their education will pay it back pretty quickly"

these days Google Scholar usually knows about my publications having been made publicly available before I do, and so I just update the list of publications on my web page based on it.

I think back in the day, I would post papers on my web page because it would take too long for them to appear on the official sites, and they'd be paywalled and hard to access there.

today, i got an email from Apple, telling me that a subscription I had purchased that I no longer want was going to automatically renew, with a clear link to cancel. STRANGELY, subscriptions purchased outside of Apple never let me know this or make it easy to cancel.

@andresmh this is the great HCI problem -- if you could get something for 2% cheaper, but it had all these dark patterns like making it super hard to cancel, those costs are in the future sometime and hard to really reason about, so most people would choose to save 2% now?
