interesting human problem in the San Francisco $1.7million toilet -- crushed by a thousand policies, each individually may even be (or at least sound) reasonable, but collectively result in huge expense and delays -- and no constituency wants to give up their piece of the convoluted pie

My dear / friends: I need to ask for advise on picking for runs on paved roads and mildly unpaved trails (photo 1):

  1. ASICS Trabuco Max 2 (photo 2): the middle in weight (~290g), not waterproof. Bouncy w/ rocker design.
  2. Salomon Speedcross 5 (photo 3): the heaviest (~295g), waterproof(?). Big lugs.
  3. Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GTX (photo 4): the lightest (~270g), waterproof. Smallest lugs.

Do you have experience w/ any of these? What would you pick?

@BenjaminHan lots of individual preference involved across different shoes, but i don't think you need any sort of trail shoes for these sorts of surfaces

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@BenjaminHan i've never bothered with waterproof running shoes, but maybe that could be nice? anyway, like i said, so much personal preference! i have always liked Nike shoes, since they run narrow, and my feet are narrow

coauthored 3 papers, reflective of the wonderful diversity of topics I get to work on --

  1. explored how local entrepreneurs might engage with generative AI via a series of workshops:
    https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jbigham/pubs/pdfs/2024/deconstructing-genai.pdf

  2. built and studied a tool called COMPA that uses speech recognition and LLMs to help AAC users not be left behind in conversations
    https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jbigham/pubs/pdfs/2024/compa.pdf

  3. built a tool to help ML engineers optimize ML models, widely used at Apple

I'm working on a CAREER this year. Advice welcome!!

@jeremy here's the advice i wrote up a while back! https://jeffreybigham.com/blog/2019/nsf-career-award.html

i've reached that point in my career where i'm purposefully scheduling 15 minute meetings.

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@andresmh 10 years ago i was doing "no meetings", now i'm doing 15 minute meetings all day, what will i be doing in another 10 years?

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@bkeegan @andresmh to be fair, all their questions are coming from their own GPTs too… i like that they can talk to each other, and i can just like sit outside and watch clouds go slowly by

do you ever think about how most of k-12 schooling is training on test?

lobsterofrevenge, to climate
@lobsterofrevenge@mastodon.social avatar

I am thinking of going into the carbon credits business: Instead of me flying to Paris, which could happen if you refuse to pay, you can pay me $360 to not fly to Paris and thus avoid 3.6 tons of CO2 emissions. If you pay me $1700 I will not fly first class, and thus avoid 17.7 tons of CO2 emissions, which is a better deal for you.

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@lobsterofrevenge i was just about to light this giant mound of tires on fire, but for only my kid's first year of college tuition (and room and board), i could be persuaded not to. it's not extortion, it's environmentalism!

non-professors might ask, why do professors meticulously put all of their stuff on the websites? is it just for promotion (and bragging?)

yes, but also, i consult my own website like a million times a week because people keep asking me for stuff that is reported there, links and papers and bios and all that stuff.

so, when you make yourself, make it useful to you!

@pg i hate that computers don't have turbo buttons anymore. sometimes innovation really just sets us back.

    @pg @wollman @amyjko y'all are so interesting, i had like 8 CDs and just listened to them over and over again, and also to the radio. i did get a CD changer for my car in high school. i just thought it was cool that it could do that but didn't care at all about the music. i still listen to mostly those CDs over and over, very calming.

    "11. Do you listen to or watch podcasts? If so, which ones?"

    I definitely can't be impartial -- I strongly believe that it's impossible to "watch" a podcast.

    @barik it is pretty amazing how websites don't really "go down" like they used to even with peak traffic, … i mean except for this one, haha, but it did work in a few seconds… maybe these systems and networking people are doing something useful after all!

    always amazed how many completely free (and completely empty 😂) electric car chargers there are around the Pittsburgh ‘burbs

    jbigham,
    @jbigham@hci.social avatar

    @andresmh this doesn’t exist “in the city” (of Pittsburgh), although CMU, UPitt, Apple both have free charging if you make it into their garages
