how do i place a bet that tiktok will still exist in a year?

jbigham, to random

some people use slack threading slightly different than me, and it's one of the most annoying meaningless things i encounter each day

if we’re honest, most of us are mostly doing the statistically likely thing given the context

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@jmissig you don't have to know how to do statistics to be likely though! :)

@pg omg, it's replaced our jobs!

I'm probably going to piss off people here.

Two things could be true at the same time.

  1. CCP is most probably using TikTok to promilgate propaganda deliberately.

  2. American social media companies could be used for the same purpose.

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@ppatel isn't it obvious that this is the case? e.g., cambridge analytica was about exactly that. i think from there you could start to tease apart differences and whether or not you think they are meaningful. but, i don't find this controversial

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@ppatel people gonna people, but i thiink the bigger thing is we were able to eventually undersand cambridge analytica, would we have the same ability for tiktok? idk, but probably not

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@RobW @ppatel i think there's some question of whether it "worked" … but, it represents an attempt to manipulate people via an american social media company … you could probably say the same with very targeted differentiated ad campaigns, which are hard to track/independently monitor

just found out that a paper i'm a coauthor of with @barik was accepted -- this is a big deal, life goal achieved :)

jbigham,

@pg @barik my Guo number is infinite :(… how is that even possible? because we only talk about the important things and not research?

this is a little conspiratorial, but…

have you ever wondered how to unlock a tesla when it's out of power? i hate that little button to open the door, seems so unnecesary, like touchscreens on a washing machine unnecessary.

turns out, there's a whole confusing manual about how to do it:
https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-A7A60DC7-E476-4A86-9C9C-10F4A276AB8B.html

unrelatedly, someone died as their tesla slowly submerged in a pond, which is full of water, which doesn't play well with electricity?…

ignoring everything else (and that's a lot to ignore), it's a supremely difficult human-computer interaction challenge to figure out how to have a considered decision be made within 15 minutes -- not mentioned here, but presumably there's a playbook drawn up in advance… although strategically, that playbook should probably overestimate likelihood of a response?; how could confirmation be made across multiple people?

given the way that corporations treat consumers… should people who discover "glitches" really be prosecuted? sometimes my rewards card doesn't work because these systems are badly implemented and no human is able to override… i hope the companies can be prosecuted in those cases. seems only fair.

This guy right here. See those scars? This guy has lived the hard problems. He’s tried the things that didn’t work, paid the price and kept trying. This feeder is supposed to be squirrel proof but it’s not proof against my man here, this is a squirrel that gets shit done. I don’t like what you’re up to here, guy, but I recognize myself in what you’re doing and I respect you.

really nice to host Ming Yin today at @cmuhcii -- if you haven't see her work, she has a really nice set of results that speak to when people trust (or distrust) AI, how they're right/wrong, and how we might design interventions to do better together

biden done good tonight. if you want to take something positive out of a good fraction of the country who seems to think "human vigor" is what is needed for leadership, i don't think chatgpt is gonna AGI that anytime soon.

recently learned that there is a push in more privileged schools to get rid of AP courses… anyone know of evidence of whether this truly is better for kids, how it impacts college admission? as a kid who attended a rural high school w/ no AP, i definitely felt behind
