jdr,

Resistive heating is almost perfectly efficient. Where else would the energy go? Using a hot piece of metal to heat water might be slower than using microwave radiation, but that’s a different kettle of fish.

Free-Storage List. At any given time only a part of the memory reserved for list structures will actually be in use for storing S-expressions. The remaining registers (in our system the number, initially, is approximately 15,000) are arranged in a single list called the free-storage list. A certain register, FREE, in the program contains the location of the first register in this list. When a word is required to form some additional list structure, the first word on the free-storage list is taken and the number in register FREE is changed to become the location of the second word on the free-storage list. No provision need be made for the user to program the return of registers to the free-storage list

People who order "a decaff coffee with an extra shot" - why?

All our coffee is served with two shots by default. We’re not some fancy coffee shop, just a motorway service station that makes coffee to go. We have some regulars who order a decaff with an extra shot. I explain thats going to have three shots total, and they’re happy with it....

Cancel the wedding. Just have a tiny one. This became popular over COVID but is just a great idea in general.

Can someone tell him that I think that I know the problem? (bbs.archlinux.org)

I have a 5,5 myself, but not installed arch yet (I will because of Nvidia 🤪btw) and I have the same problem. The solution is to boot with the stick unplugged and holding alt until you get into the boot choosing thingy. While on that screen, plug in the usb you want to boot from. It should magically appear. I have no clue why...

NASA May Pay $1 Billion to Destroy the International Space Station. Here's Why (www.scientificamerican.com)

For nearly a quarter century, the International Space Station (ISS) has continuously hosted astronauts and science experiments as an enduring and beloved bastion of humanity in low-Earth orbit. Yet despite its successes, the space station’s days are numbered....

jdr,

I endorse this post.

Wikipedia is great, and they do have real operating costs, but hosting all the data is about 2% of their budget. All the admins and editors and contributors are volunteers. Most of the money is spent on projects not related to the encyclopedia and donations to miscellaneous social groups.

My thoughts on this community + more announcements

Hey there! It’s your favorite (and only) /c/internetfuneral moderator here. I just wanted to share my current thoughts about this community as a whole and get some steam off while I’m at it. All my comments can be summarized in this comment I’ve made in a deleted posts:...

jdr,

I live in Europe spatially and temporally, and sitting at my 1998 Gateway pc in this abandoned gas station deciding whether things are internet funereal enough is just about the most internet funereal thing I can think of.

What are your thoughts on the idea of adding an edit history feature to posts, and comments in Lemmy?

I believe that the addition of an edit history would be a massive boon to the usefulness of Lemmy on the whole. A common problem with forums is the relatively low level of trust that users can have in another’s content. When one has the ability to edit their posts, and comments this invites the possibility of misleading the...

jdr,

How much extra storage and bandwidth would it use? It’s just text. It’s clear that you don’t like the idea, but I don’t find your reasons convincing.

Forgetting (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

More seriously, ADHD, among others, is a working memory disorder. A way to cover this is to use “prosthetics” for it, such as a notepad that you always carry with you. If this affects you strongly, train your muscle memory to use it to note down what you were planning to do and to refer to it when you forgot....
