A now costs £2 in the co-op, down from £2.75. Suspect £1.50 will be the low water mark this year.

Polling y'all IT and security people for my own amusement and frustration -

The very worst tech sales pitch you got this week:

    jesscourtney,

@hacks4pancakes Was years ago though. Tech start up where I answered the phone. Sales guy rude/dismissive wanting to talk to one of our engineers. Later the call transfers to CFO: me. Now so polite and professional, he didn’t realise I was the same person…

You and your partners value my privacy you say.

Each and every one of your 1,542 partners?

    Are you sure about that?

And, despite the tempting button, I don’t actually get to “reject all” because “some” of your 1,542 partners “believe they have a legitimate interest”.

Well, I believe this is a legitimate reason to hard pass on your site.

My Uber driver was on insta watching reels the entire hour+ drive, and then missed the exit at rush hour and added 20 minutes to the trip. AITA if I rate him down for it? I get bored too, but like, damn.

    jesscourtney,

@hacks4pancakes Airport taxi in Vancouver years ago. Driver took a call (holding phone to ear) then started writing notes with pad on passenger seat, steering with knees. On highway. Growing horror, mute, thinking how mad I’m going to be if we all die, it takes a near miss for me to blurt out “please get off the phone”. They grumble the other driver was at fault. I obligingly agree but say all the more reason to be vigilant.

The conflicting desire not to die v not to be rude…

Old house life means you enjoy beautiful period features while freezing your bits off in winter. Bit of a shock this morning.

    jesscourtney,

    @keefeglise Woolly hat deployed.

@kentindell It’s illuminating watching the wave pattern of price changes between stores in the UK too.

I spent 20 bloody-minded minutes declining each one (there were hundreds, thousands?). A software update was automatically applied recently. I suppose I should check what the settings are now…

I see a lot of posts here about why the other social media platforms are terrible & is the one to rule them all*.

Personally, Mastodon is my favorite & I prefer the with decentralized servers & open source standards.

But I also don’t mind coexisting with the others. Rather, I think it’s a good thing. All of us should settle in where we feel comfortable & find community.

    • Overstatement, but a Tolkien reference always seems appropriate.
    jesscourtney,

@Sheril Fundamentally agree that it is - and should remain - personal choice. But. I used to be on Twitter for news and events (local, world, breaking) and that’s not fully replicated here. The separate silos of communities, where most can’t/won’t coexist due to the overhead means I’m missing what Twitter had. I left and won’t return as my small stand against Musk. For similar reasons won’t be on Threads or Bluesky. But maybe we can hear from them here via federation, which I think is possible?

@fulelo “Inside the casinos though, business continued and as the air conditioning was blasting so high people were wearing jumpers to stay warm.”

    Impotent rage.

Thirty years ago I always changed into jeans and jumpers on arrival at the cinema during summer, hot enough for shorts and a tee outside, uncomfortably cold inside. Distressing then given the science at the time, deeply depressing now.

Why do form creators hate punctuation?

I once had trouble with an HMRC tax return. After numerous edits I eventually worked out it didn’t like the £ symbol. Go figure.

And then there’s the time I caused havoc in a restaurant’s system when my ; triggered an SQL command…
