Physicist and astronaut Sally Ride was born in 1951. She was the first American woman and the youngest American in space. After NASA she worked on arms control and physics, investigated the Columbia and Challenger disasters, and promoted STEM through Sally Ride Science.

I haven't seen you mention orientation in your historical women of science posts, but she was also gay.

noelle, to books

I've gotten some reading done today! This is a big accomplishment since I get distracted by social media a lot 🤣

@noelle I literally have to block social media at some times during the day and set a time at night beyond which it can't be used, and I love to read (as per my username).

Leia from Star Wars is (I see these 3 as the most argued):

@absolutspacegrl Chaotic good, in my estimation. She throws a wrench in the way the SW universe is 'supposed' to work.

@absolutspacegrl This is now a hot topic amongst my middle school faculty.

@absolutspacegrl Well I posed the question to two folks who know more about alignment than I do, and they both had strong takes in the 'lawful' or 'neutral' realm. (Where Han Solo would align also came up).

Whoever was in charge of casting for MTV's My So-Called Life really knocked it out of the park in terms of longevity of the careers of the main cast.

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@seldo ...
Please excuse my pedantry it was a network show (ABC, I believe?), and then MTV got the re-run. But yes, really remarkable in its eye for actors among many other things.

Non-religious-studies-trained people saying stupid shit about is one of my least favorite things about social media. Everyone thinks they are qualified to weigh in on this topic, and the Dunning-Kruger is extremely strong.

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@bp Thank you for asking for clarification on that, as I realized it could be an implication. No, that's not what I'm saying. Experiences from within a faith tradition provide a necessary perspective on that faith tradition. That's with the understanding that every faith tradition contains a multiplicity of experiences and perspectives.

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@bp In my experience the majority of people doing Jewish Studies are practicing Jews who mostly see it as a way to engage with their tradition, so unfortunately hot takes are difficult to come by.

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@bp It's also my experience with members of other traditions in RS. They're either practicing or come from a place of respect/curiosity. Even those studying religious violence come at it from a desire for understanding.

Just saw a DW article suggesting the Benin Bronzes could end up in a private collection [edited to add: which obviously sucks], but there is so much to say about the justification of colonial attitudes ('see, we told you they'd be safer here') that a single post seems insufficient. The point is not that we return stolen artifacts because the 'right' thing happens to them. The point is we return them because they were stolen. Also, the question of why some African countries have oligarchies that might lock away these treasures is deeply tied to colonialism as well.

I'm giving a try (ironic since where I grew up, the Indy 500 was the first race I paid attention to), but its similarity to the NFL in its promotion is throwing me. I like the British/international flair of .

@Eamon1916 For me it's not the drivers, it's the locations and the historically significant teams. I would rather see Ferrari than Chevy, and rather see a race in Azerbaijan than Alabama (though both places violate the hell out of human rights). I totally understand folks who feel otherwise; don't mean to be a punk about it.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
The last three books are set when everyone is old, anyway, so it's perfect!
