I do think there are times when a business or organizations needs to inject a sense of urgency and importance in their workers, but it can't be to get out of a hole, which is what Samsung is doing.

If it's a race to a meaningful innovation, such as a medical treatment/cure or an environmental discovery, then I can see motivating staff and asking them to work overtime.

But to mandate it from leadership to get out of a hole? No

Would you like your workers to feel burned out, like they don't matter and that only capitalism matters? Then try enforcing a six-day workweek on your leadership team! The effects will trickle down!

The tool I use the most when I would otherwise have writer's block is this: I write down everything I DO know about the project or assignment. Sometimes it's merely my name, the idea or pitch, and placeholders for hed and dek. As soon as I have something on the page, more follows. It's a super effective trick at getting started when I'm stuck.

I have 5 more tricks similar to that one.

@maxleibman That's a good one! Very similar to mine. I never want to look at a blank page, so I don't. I also have templates that are prefilled for certain kinds of articles I write—same idea. And then once I write the title, my name, something else always follows that I didn't think of before

@rejinl @maxleibman I love that!

Sometimes I like James Clear. But sometimes I read his advice & burst out, "Bwha ha ha ha! Could you even IMAGINE if a woman tried to do that?!"

It's stuff like "focus on just one thing that you truly want to accomplish at the absolute expense of everything else." Society would FALL APART!

This post is clearly a truncated thought and there is a lot to hash out. The gist of the complicated part is women are socialized to take care of everything, not just the things they want for themselves

@travisfw I have incredible focus. I am terrible at multitasking. And yet, I cannot take a break from doing a high-focus activity and NOT wash the dishes in the sink or NOT refill the dog's prescription medication or NOT wipe the coffee grounds off the counter. I cannot bypass these other things to only take a break and get back to focus, and therefore my mind is always a little bit occupied by them.

jilleduffy,
@jilleduffy@mastodon.social avatar

@travisfw Some studies have looked "kinship work" which is essentially keeping up w family & friends, remembering birthdays, reaching out to people you haven't seen in a while. Women overwhelmingly do this work more than men. That is a generalization, but it's what the data show. And if you do this work, your mind is always juggling extra stuff. So even with incredible focusing ability, if you do care and kinship work, your mind is never as free as it could be to focus

Today is the 20th anniversary of the launch of Gmail.

The reasons behind Gmail's success have nothing to do with productivity or innovation, and everything to do with where we were in 2004.

"The male midlife crisis is well-documented and parodied, but we have no concept of what a deep reckoning with the female self looks like."

I wrote a deeply personal essay for a new website for Gen X and elder Millennial women

This one is a little scary to put out there! Hope you enjoy it.

"We don’t have a cultural narrative for a typical female midlife crisis, though. Is it a shared experience among women to confront their impermanence in this world as a normal part of reaching their 40s or 50s? Do they awaken one day to realize they are worthy of the things they want for themselves? Struggle with their changing identity? Question their life’s priorities? Why has no one ever brought it up in conversation? "
