Slept like ass, feel terrible, everything hurts. The Finnish nightless nights or whatever it's called is wild because while the sun theoretically drops below the horizon it doesn't actually get dark at all! What an entirely normal thing to live with!
We don’t have it nearly as dramatically as you here in the Seattle region of the US, but even sunset at 9 pm and sunrise at 5 am means there’s light til 11 pm and again at 330 am, and it can be HARD.
I both love it (more energy during the day! Sometimes boundless!) and hate it (if I happen to wake up after 4am, my body is like “it’s daytiiiiiime, let’s go!!).
@sarahtaber I’ve heard that sailors nicknames kinda derived from this - “limeys” for some that used citrus and “krauts” for those who figured out sauerkraut. Any truth to that?
@thomas Oh wow, TIL! Thanks for sharing this. Also minor note, but it appears to only show that menu option if you're already following someone. (Not surprising, I just literally tried it first on you and was confused for a moment.)
Time to mute some people and keywords for a week to try and mitigate the overwhelming sense of doom, futility, and despair. I don't think I've ever felt this disheartened about the industry I've worked in for 24 years.
Tech has never been a shining beacon but the nosedive it's taken with this AI shit over the past 6 months to a year has really tanked any interest and optimism I have in it.
@gairdeachas 🦑 Hugs, BFF. I'm glad there's the ability to mute here, because, yeah, it can get super overwhelming at times. (Also, this reminds me that I need to get back to my personal rules about what I boost and the emotional tenor of those things.)
Also it's sunny and lovely today and so I'm hopeful that you're outside some away from all of this! <3
I find it interesting the weird subjective turn in tech feelings. I felt better about tech and tech companies 2020-2021 than I do now. It feels like a sea change in their egregious behavior in the last two years.
@openbuddha I feel similarly, and I can't tell if it's that I have distance from the inside now, or if things have actually changed. I often felt when I was working for MSFT that people over-rotated on ill intent versus incompetence (or hard tradeoffs) from the outside, because I saw people think about things in ways outsiders often seemed to assume they didn't. I'm still noodling on how my newer feelings about tech square with the people I know who still work in those same companies.
@openbuddha And it's not all the layoffs (for me), either - I came of age in tech right after the dot-com bust, and basically spent my first five years out working at IBM while they seemingly laid people off every week or two.
Some of it, I think, is the recent combination of crypto hype and AI hype, and how gross both of those have been.
Anyone want to share their opinions on #SewingMachines? I may be interested in buying a new one. I have a 20 yr old Janome that is so loud I can't use it when anyone is home because they complain. It's also cranky & I could never get it to make good stitches consistently. I want to make my own clothing & since this is probably a passing fancy, I'd like to not pay an arm & a leg for it. (Maybe a second hand deal?) I don't mind an older machine and I don't want anything computer-y. #craft#sewing
Installed Linux Mint on a Virtual Box to start playing with it as a possible home OS in the future. So far, so good, although I haven't done much beyond adding some basic stuff. The fonts and graphics look a wee bit fuzzy, which I'm suspecting is the fault of Virtual Box (or the interaction) instead of Cinnamon, but we'll see how that wears over time.
Pondering whether I want to do the GNOME integration with Google or if that just means I'm going backwards on my de-Googling progress. Hm.
@openbuddha I’ve heard Mint+cinnamon is the closest to windows and pretty user friendly. I’m down for that, and I like the one I’ve been playing with. Ubuntu is probably fine too (I remember it being decent years ago when I was learning Docker stuff, tho I didn’t use a desktop at all), but I’m not particularly trying to optimize.
@RockyC@IchoTolot Yeah, I’d totally be willing to pay again for another version for Linux, I like it so much. I was noticing forums say it kinda-sorta works in wine but has a lot of crashes, which isn’t something I want to sign up for.
