    @phranck But... almost everything Apple showed in terms of UI, was already there in Oculus 🤷‍♂️

    It's really hardly "years ahead" - yes hardware is great, the best even - but software wise it's... really nothing special

    If I were announcing an Apple headset, I would make sure the first thing you see is a fully realized, cycle-accurate, original Macintosh emulator in 3D 😋 Insert floppy disk, boot it up to the original demo, complete with intro speech.

    And then zoom out to reveal the rest of xrOS.

    Just me?

    kkolakowski,
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith Yeah... it might be a problem that Apple basically disallows any kind of emulators on their stores 😉

    If that change in the future (very unlikely given recently Nintendo rage) or there will be sideloading possibility for XR headset - it would be interesting to have such 3D multiemulator for all kind of old devices!

    What are the odds this xrOS/Reality Pro stuff allows non App Store software installation? To me seems hard to justify a lockdown on a $3k "Pro" product.

    kkolakowski,
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @paul I guess it might be similar "lock" as on macOS?

    In theory, macOS on Apple Silicon allows to run iOS apps - devs must "allow" for that, which, in practice, means tons of apps & games are not available. Either due to legal stuff, money (Mac apps/games are more expensive) or devs want us to use either a native Mac or web version of the app.

    Sideloading is still possible but with many hacks and SIP disabled AFAIR

    I don't think Apple wants to treat xrOS/realityOS as macOS, for many reasons.

    A lot of people talking about No Man's Sky in the context of a VR release for Apple's headset, and I don't think any of them have actually used No Man's Sky in VR. Game is incredibly demanding, so much so that Apple's demo last year chugged along at an embarassing sub-30fps on an M-series desktop chip. 30fps on a VR headset is a one-way trip to vomit town. That is not the hero experience you're looking for, and seems very much counterproductive to the idea of bringing XR to the mainstream

    kkolakowski,
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith It supposed to be released last year AFAIR, so it's quite possible that Apple indeed proposed that they will help them optimizing the game and bring it to XR - who knows 🤔

    XR headset might also have something different, more powerful than M2. Maybe more GPU cores? 🤔

    It might also be based on the new 3 nm process "M3"-based SoC which should have better performance and thermals.

    Did anyone manage to replicate the Health app’s charts using Swift Charts? The behavior I’m looking for is:

    1. The Y-axis doesn’t scroll with the content. It remains in place.
    2. Scrolls with pagination.
    3. Loads data on demand. I can’t be sure the Health app does this but it seems safe to assume.

    Screen recording of the Health app showing the behavior I am interested in.

    @blakespot I think cores from A14s are exactly the same cores as in M1: „Firestorm” P-cores & „Icestorm” E-cores - just in 2+4 config instead of 4+4 like in M1.

    M1 is simply a "bigger" version of A14

    BTW: M1 GPU has theoretical ~2.8 TFLOP. Base PS4 has 1.85 TFLOP

    We're a week away from WWDC, and the next versions of iPadOS and friends. Stage Manager on iPad remains effectively untouched from launch, defying even my lowest expectations/hopes for improvement 🫤 Either they think it's perfect as-is, or they chose to abandon it in favor of working on the next version.

    I am very worried it's the former, but even with the latter, with iPad's traditionally-two-year cycle that could mean sad times for another whole year

    kkolakowski,
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith In case of those two apps - I truly can't see how they suppose to support "compact" size classes without having basically iPhone version of the apps.

    I think this is the major issue basically - for more advanced iPad apps. You can’t resize "just a little bit" - you either size up to the iPhone-level or not at all 🤷‍♂️

    Maybe we’ll see that changes next week on

    “AR is one of these very few profound technologies that we will look back on one day and went, how did we live our lives without it?” — Tim Cook, 2021

    With quips like these, you might easily expect whatever Apple is going to announce in about a week's time to be a fundamental part of the next several decades of the company. Will it create entirely new industries for developers? Who is going to get left behind; not everybody made it through the transition from a Mac-centric to iOS-centric world

    kkolakowski,
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith We will see 🤷‍♂️

    As well, Apple might have been wrong, and they just lost 6 years of work on AR/VR headset when they could spend it improving their AI and working on generative AIs that might be much more potent and groundbreaking than AR/VR.

    AR will revolutionize the world but only in a form of all-day wearable glasses - headset won't be that.

    That being said... I can't wait to be wrong 😉🤓

    Is it common in your country to take leftovers home from a restaurant? Feel free to mention where you live.

    I ask because yesterday my girlfriend and I went to a restaurant with a menu that had 10 servings. There was no way we could finish it all, so my girlfriend asked for boxes to take some of it home. I think she is really cool for doing that because it's not very common in Denmark, and I'm too shy to do it myself. This made me wonder how normal it is to do so around the world.

    PSA: I just discovered that if you have enabled the “Application supports iTunes file sharing” option in your Info.plist then your app's documents directory will appear on device in the Files app.

    I'd thought that this only applied to Finder on the Mac. I've been getting sporadic reports of users accidentally deleting their steps database directly on their iPhone, which confused me to no end. Now I finally know how they did it. Maybe I need to add a “PLS_DO_NOT_TOUCH_ANYTHING.txt" file.

    The listing of all the files in Pedometer++’s documents directory, including a collection of core data files.

    kkolakowski, (edited )
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @_Davidsmith In general, "Documents" location shouldn't be used for internal files, use „Application Support" instead, and if you need to extract those files sometimes, add some exporting options inside app.

    Many apps (and answers on SO!) are making this mistake, but that's not the correct "default" place.

    Usually it doesn't "hurt", because of sandbox and users don't see them anyway - but in case like yours, it might "leak" (again - could be a "feature”)

    dancounsell, to random

    So, I have a theory about macOS coming to iPad Pro…

    You can run iPad apps on macOS, and more often than not, it's a lousy experience. Why would Apple have shipped this feature? Well…

    What if running iPad apps on macOS for the past few years was Apple's way of getting ready for when the M2 iPad can run macOS 🤯

    Imagine running a version of macOS on iPad that supported Mac apps and native iPad apps. Now that would be great.

    So much points to them moving in this direction. The Pro moniker for iPads, the fact Apple have said touch on Mac hardware doesn’t make sense, the redesigned preferences on macOS, the rumours of a bigger iPad Pro, I could go on, and on…

    The more I think about it, the more a version of macOS on iPad Pro makes sense. You could have iPadOS and iPadProOS (essentially, a version of macOS).

    Am I way off in my thinking or is this a possibility?

    kkolakowski,
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @dancounsell What today announcement is saying, is the opposite: why would they spend probably years of development of their "Pro" apps for iPadOS, if they would want to run macOS anyway soon 😉

    Apple strategy simply to make us buy both Macs and iPads. They could "merge" - but Apple clearly doesn't want to - leaving both devices in weird places. Macs "can't" get touchscreens or some other "forms", and iPads can't really evolve into "real" computers.

    In long term - it might hurt both platforms 🤷‍♂️

    We have a MacBook Air M1 set up for my parents in perma-clamshell mode, connected to a 1440p Dell display. Since sometime in the past few months, the display will only be recognized at [stretched] 1280x1024 at boot time and requires an unplug/replug to fix it. It reverts back to 1280x1024 every time the MacBook sleeps 🥲 Tried a whole bunch of things to fix it, including SwitchResX, but nothing sticks. Was never a problem in macOS 11 and macOS 12, but now is a nightmare. What do?

    kkolakowski,
    @kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith macOS is a nightmare with external displays and that state is here for years, even back with the Intel Macs 🤷‍♂️

    I thought that with 13.3 finally fixed all my issues with external display (connected via USB-C) (previously: it wouldn't start occasionally despite multiple cable disconnects).

    But then 13.3.1 happened and now occasionally my MacBook freaks out constantly switching the display on and off (also occasionally) and I have to go back to the "cable swinging" again) 😅

    FYI guys, Swift 5.7 introduced Clock protocol and Duration type that are great improvements over the good-old TimeInterval, and finally a "proper" way to measure performance.

    One thing that is missing and should be added to Foundation (TimeInterval is part of Foundation) is conversion from Duration to TimeInterval - not a hard thing to do, but could be helpful.
