Both computers on my desk each have a 27" 4K Dell display at 1080p@2x and I wouldn't have it any other way.

You will never recover the eyesight you destroy now by pushing usable screen space over comfort

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith 1080p on 27 inch is probably too big though, but 4K @ 27 inch - also. 5K at 2x scaling is the perfect spot here IMO - and Apple nailed those proportions 🤷‍♂️

Right now I have 28 inch 3:2 display with a 4k+ res also scaled at 150% to match those sweet iMac 5K points size…

I wonder if the DMA would have happened at all if Apple had actually let Epic back on the App Store at the end of their trial like they lied and said they would 🫠

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith For sure it wouldn't happen if Apple simply allowed for a sideloading few years ago - they could even pack it as a "feature”. No third-party stores, just simple sideloading made with little effort by expanding their Enterprise Provisioning. Even stripped from some AppStore-specific features.

iPad has probably had the most dramatic shift of all of Apple's platforms, since its inception. It began as doing very few things to a very high quality, but now it does almost everything, badly. I hope history finds it to have been more than just an incubator for Apple's Mac silicon during the wayward years

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Apple still might have a chance though - but it needs a will from them!

Hardware is here - only software is the issue, they could really "fix" most of the most important roadblocks within one OS update cycle 🤷‍♂️ They just don't want to.

I remember when they introduced Face ID for iPads Pro in 2018 - I thought: "ok, so this time we'll REALLY add multiple users support and it'll be AWESOME experience!”

It was 6 years ago... 👴

Just Safari deciding that it no longer needs to render a website entirely 😑

This browser has me so frustrated.

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs To be perfectly honest: while I’m having some minor issues with Safari form time to time - those are nowhere near the issues you seems to have 🤔

Thinking about possible other reasons for that - network issues?

craiggrannell, to random
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

Needed to turn off Screen Time temporarily. Apple: “bollocks to you, then”. Infers the set-up is wiped and has me start from scratch. I go through the set-up, and it merges the new one with what was already there. But the block set-ups have been randomly wiped.

Stellar UX, there, Apple. Parents rejoicing. Etc.

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Oh yeah, it would be very nice to be able to temporarily disable screen time, but apparently it's not really possible 🤷‍♂️

Second thing would be disable it for all apps/websites for example: but that seems to be unavailable as well.

Struggling to think of what could convince me to upgrade from my 2018 11in iPad Pro

It's pretty much a Photoshop & airplane movie machine for me now. So I guess some tangible upgrade to the pencil, or if they manage to make it thinner/lighter or (gasp) fold 😄 https://mastodon.online/@9to5Mac/112320928051400405

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman Why thinner-lighter? 🤔

I have the same model - it really is the „ok" size & weight (although I keep it mostly on some holder/Magic Keyboard or hold on my laps)

Thinner & ligher usually means worse battery, worse thermals. Even if battery time will stay the same in theory, it would've been longer with bigger size.

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman You carry it with Magic Keyboard maybe? Because this combo weights indeed a lot - more than a MacBook Air basically 😅

What iPads needs now though, is more capable OS:

  • real background operations
  • allow for real IDEs, VMs, shells
  • multi-user support
kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman I have so weird feelings for iPads these days. From one side: I love the device & form factor! It's a perfect mobile computer. A tablet by day - perfect for content consumption, and a laptop if needed (with Magic Keyboard). And Apple Pencil as a great accessory as well (I don't have one though).

Apple could make it a fantastic, universal computer - they run literally the same hardware as Macs now - but they choose not to, and basically keep it as a „bigger iPhone" 🤷‍♂️

_Davidsmith, to random
@_Davidsmith@mastodon.social avatar

Today is one of those classic development days where I had put off dealing with a tricky design/UX problem during the initial creation of a feature (offline maps in Pedometer++), which I now have to solve (deleting old maps).

I didn't address it the first time because I didn't have a great answer and I hoped that after using the feature for a while the solution would come to me [narrator: it did not], but now I really kinda need to find an answer.

So I am basically this meme now.

Tom Scott saying “That was a problem for future me, and now I am future me”.

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith Related heresy 🫣: I don't think we need databases and ORM systems (like CoreData) for MOST apps that are dealing with data these days 🫣

People seems to forgot how much data you can fit in just few megabytes. That's tens of thousands of records sometimes! Depending on model of course.

You can read all of it from some JSON in a blink of an eye (miliseconds!), keep it in RAM and occasionally save back to disk on separate thread 🤷‍♂️

craiggrannell, to retrogaming
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

I’m glad to see emulators on the App Store. But it also feels like we lost 15 years for… nothing? Back in 2009, the attached was released – a superb C64 emulator for touchscreens. But the creator got sick of Apple rejections and demands that gradually nerfed the app’s utility. So it died. But imagine it hadn’t and this app had received 15 years of updates and refinement… (And we still have no idea whether iDOS would be allowed now or would still get rejected.)

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell I still don't really understand why current emulator rules on the AppStore are limited (at least on paper?) to "retro GAME CONSOLES”? Like, from all of emulators - those are the most „controversial” ones (thx Nintendo)

Emulating computers were always far less controversial, but maybe Apple doesn't want their iPads or iPhones running Windows 95 or some other weird reason? 🤷‍♂️

With moves like this, maybe it's not a given that Google’s Android will be the primary competitor to Apple's platforms in every new post-PC market?

Maybe in AR/VR, Google just has little to no say in the conversation, and Meta is dominant for the next 15 years?

Is Google about to enter the 2010s-Microsoft phase of its relevance? 👀

https://www.threads.net/@zuck/post/C6EbeLPxovW

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith Interesting is that they showed their VR/AR OS basically as AR platform first! 😅 For sure it has nothing to do with the Vision Pro 😅

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

You can't let a product like Vision Pro stumble out of the gate half-finished with no launch event, no developer support and no meaningful updates or new content in 3 months. Virtually nobody even got a dev kit. There's little to no App Store discoverability, so apps that are there don't get surfaced, which means they make no money to justify future investment in the platform.

Apple has got so complacent that it's forgotten what it takes to fight for a new product category

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I had a suspicion that Apple simply quietly "canceled" Vision Pro even before it was released 🤷‍♂️ They treated it as a "dev kit" for their own, and experiment with new kind of OS.

There're two possibilities how it will evolve:

  • No real future for Vision Pro. But the "real deal" will be some glasses running visionOS but on iPhone with some hi-speed, wireless connection 🤔

  • They want to slowly evolve it, introducing a cheaper version that could be sold for the mass market.

I had a tab open for just a couple of minutes, was reading its contents, and then navigated away—only for Safari to decide not to render it anymore.

Lately, my experience with Safari has been so unstable that it's become unusable, especially considering how crucial browsing is to my day-to-day activities.

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs I had this issue with AppStore Connect and developer.apple.com for years now 😅 Problem is that Apple websites usually works even worse on non-Apple browsers 🤷‍♂️

Also: many issues in Safari is because websites targets basically Chromium now - the new Internet Explorer 😬

Getting some Qs about Delta availability, hope this clarifies things!

• Delta is exclusive to AltStore in EU
• Because of Apple’s new dev terms, all downloads in EU cost us €0.50/yr in AltStore PAL and App Store…so couldn’t offer Delta in EU App Stores without making it paid
• App Store only supports one-time paid-upfront apps, so we’d have to pick a price that could support ~years of CTFs
• PAL’s €1.50 covers Delta’s CTF
• We’d make everything free everywhere if it wasn’t for the CTF 🙂

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@rileytestut Yeah, and it shows complete stupidity of this.

One question though: is it possible to create TWO accounts: one with "regular" rules and second one for EU-exclusive apps? 🤔

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@rileytestut Ah, ok - that makes sense... So if I'll create a separate account for (exclusive) apps to distribute in AltStore for example - it should be ok, right? 😏

Came across a neat-looking indie gamedev tool that I wanted to check out, but they dropped Mac support when Apple killed 32-bit apps 🤷‍♂️

The bridges Apple burned with indie game devs with the 32-bit cutoff and notarization still have repercussions today, and will far into the future

image/png

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I'm still in awe to be honest - how in the actual hell, WINE can run 32-bit x86 Win32 code via Rosetta on Apple Silicon Macs 🤷‍♂️ It doesn't seem like another emulation layer or something 🤔

But 32-bit x86 apps on macOS? Nope, just nope.

craiggrannell, to random
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

So iGBA has now been removed from the App Store. The question is: why? Could be all sorts of reasons. Which is fun, because that means we still don’t know what Apple’s actual stance on emulation happens to be.

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Because of @rileytestut - it was based on a code of his older emulator- that was not allowed to be redistributed.

That's NOT Nintendo - AFAIK

retrospecs, to random
@retrospecs@mastodon.social avatar

As a no-doubt thrillling update, Retrospecs will continue to be available in the EU, as I’ve found a virtual office package with mail forwarding which Apple deems acceptable in terms of EU Digital Services Act compliance.

On the downside, it’s costing me about 10% of what Retrospecs generates in the average year, so that’s just peachy. 😔

@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@retrospecs BTW: Could you share what kind of service you've found? 🤔 It might help many developers as well!

There have been huge parts of the iPad Simulator broken since iOS 16 & the introduction of Stage Manager and nobody has noticed/bothered to fix them 🤷‍♂️

You haven't been able to drag app icons out into windows in two simulator OS releases — the standard way to initiate multitasking.

Holding the cmd key to show the keyboard shortcuts panel sends SpringBoard to the lockscreen the first time each launch. It's a pain to debug keyboard commands.

The iPad app development experience reeks of neglect

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I think that dragging icons on SpringBoard is broken also on iOS simulator - maybe not a big deal but with many dev-apps I would like some organization 😅

@stroughtonsmith @daringfireball It would ok’ish if Microsoft/NT allows for easy multi-architecture binaries 🤷‍♂️ Or at least doesn't make compiling multi-architecture code such a chore!

Maybe it changed, but last time I checked it required some manual SDK downloads for Visual Studio, and poking with XML project files to even „arm" target appear in VS 😅

On macOS & Xcode it's a default and usually just one click away to have a universal binary for your app 🤷‍♂️

★ From the Department of Spending Tim Cook’s Money: Online Photo Storage Is Surely Expensive to Offer, but Apple Should Offer More

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@daringfireball I guess that's not (only) that. 1080p is enough quality for most purposes, it's also less energetically expensive to record (longer record time), better light condition. People also usually record very short bursts of videos, not fully featured movies.

I use 4K only for special occasions, like if I know I'll be recording in some longer session.

Is there any way to tell the battery health of AirPods without going to the Apple Store? My Pros and Max both feel like the battery is not quite what it used to be, but I'm not sure if it's just in my head

kkolakowski,
@kkolakowski@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig No way sadly, but that's probably not in your head, especially for AirPods... Those tiny batteries can deteriorate faster. Same for Apple Watch (which can be checked)
