Wow.

In astrobiology tomorrow I'm going to talk about how Ramadan only officially starts after the crescent moon is seen - it's extremely tied to observational astronomy: https://www.moonsighting.com/1445rmd.html

Ramadan Mubarak!

(You might argue that you shouldn't talk about religion in a science class, but all science is done by humans in the context of our different cultures, and I personally love learning about the many ways that astronomy influences culture)

When at Hamburg observatory we had a couple of requests over the years as to whether the crest would be visible on one day or only the next.

Of course this is interesting!

Trying to not fly. Was going to take the train from Munich to Leiden tomorrow. This morning I get a message that tomorrow there’s going to be a strike. Changing to today is an absolute nightmare on the Bahn website and don’t get me started on the unmitigated disaster that is the app.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@apolitosb

I did that trip last week Wednesday (from Heidelberg, not Munich, though) and it was not fun. Without strikes.

I can strongly recommend https://bahn.expert, which offers the real-time knowledge about train departires and together with the DB app allowed me to re-route. Which I had to do several times.

My original connection was the ICE international from Cologne, which was broken. Via Venlo was too delayed, and finally went via Arnhem with several changeovers. Good luck!

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@apolitosb

But I made it. And I made it back Friday despite strike fallouts. Would never fly that route.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@apolitosb

It took me 7.5h instead of 6 last week, same on the way back. I was able to work ~half the time.

But I changed the question for myself: it's not "flying or rail". It's "is the meeting requiring me to be there in person or not". I won't fly in Europe, that's my goal. (And try not to do intercontinental in the first place.) So it's rail - or video. If rail, then it takes as long as it takes.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@apolitosb

But in the current astro-"sociology" situation and with the still not perfect remote-technology I fully acknowledge that I have to treat this approach as a privilege.

My kids are older and I don't have to be at every meeting in person. So I can take my time, or attend remotely.

But looking at which prerequisites this requires for early/mid-career researchers, this is not good. Be mobile, have no other responsibilities, have money and right passport.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@apolitosb

Btw. during my trip back I classified 4000 Euclid galaxies and found at least 2 gravitational lenses...

But writing papers was out of the question, I admit.

Any tips for dealing with hayfever in Japan? The over-the-counter claritin does... zero. I was hoping it might pass in a week or so, but I remain a goopy mess.

I could... visit the doctor... but that seems like a lot of hassle compared to just asking everyone on mastodon 😉

(Japan medicine tends to be different brands, and often weaker, than the overseas counterpart. I know what I could get in the UK or US, but unsure if there's anything reasonably effective in Japan.)

Sorry, I should have written more than one word: I'm using this in this dose, though not in Japan. One tablet in the evening, not making me drowsy at all. One could up the dose to 2 if needed.

I don't know if it's above counter in Japan.

hours and hours of the most annoying videos ever made by people.

I'm sure there's an English version of this, but it's literally in the press texts of what the machines can do. OK, they don't say "face recognition", they say then know which gender and age a person is approaching the machine to show them products they supposedly prefer...

And yes, I hate the ‘discussion’ about short haul flight bans.

The idea in principle is fine, but the crux is HOW you do it and WHAT you ban (France bans very, very little) - but the number of people going “ooooooh can we have the same here?" massively outweighs the number of people who’ve examined the ineffectiveness of France's ban

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@jon

Yes, emissions scale with distance. Flights from/to Germany's are responsible for 10x more emissions than flights inside Germany:

https://www.goclimate.de/glossar/emissionen/flugverkehr/

While there really isn't a need to fly inside a small-ish country, most emissions are in the intercontinental long-haul flights.
