TIL: with git redate -c <# OF COMMITS> you can change the commit date/time and messages of commits in your repo. However: make sure you do NOT include the very first commit or the command will fail. So if you have N commits in your repo, make sure that -c als always at least one lower than N.

(I also just learned that #mastodon still doesn't support any kind of formatting when posting. When will we get some basic #markdown in here?)

@tezoatlipoca Yes, it's on the roadmap and there were pull requests since quite some time. But that's it :( On my browser mastodon just ignores it and renders it a bit less beautiful ...

Transferred the complete history of http://stallmanism.wikidot.com to a git repo and used git redate to set the correct revision date for all 17 revisions of the sacred text. Will soon create a shiny new https://stallmanism.org com and net but leave the wikidot site up for as long as it exists.

The late Pieter Hintjens and I created Stallmanism, the religion, back at fosdem 2009. He transferred the domain to me hours before he passed.

So what would happen if ByteDance sells TikTok to an European company? Or is the US still just stuck in their belief that they must own the world? The question everybody avoids, IMHO.

OK. This podcast episode is not for everyone, I admit. But I am fascinated listening to it as it explains a lot about truth and cultural norms and experiences that I can understand from my personal history of being European but spending a lot of time dealing with the specifics of other cultures, especially the US version. Yes, it's about sex. And yes it has a French accent. It goes deep. Wonderful! Modern love episode from 2024-04-10 with Esther Perel https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/10/podcasts/esther-perel-on-what-the-other-woman-knows.html

"When I ask people [about confessions and infedilty], I ask them about their own cultural codes. I don't impose mine." That's an important universal lesson I just learned.

When I joined the via my own Mastodon instance back in 2018 (and with an identi.ca, status.net, pump.io history going far back), I never thought of it as a Twitter, Facebook etc alternative. I saw it as a new planet. A fresh approach to build a real social network. I still look at it that way. I want to explore new possibilities. Try new things. Escape the gravity well of the "old", centralised networks. Find a better orbit. That is why I block threads.net on my instance.

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

I wanted (and still want) it to be different. Where I would reconnect with people that felt the same (and many of us still fondly remember Google+ and its predecessor Orkut ;) but also connect with new people that made the jump for whatever other reason. I hoped (and still hope) that we can explore new ways. To boldly go where no social network has gone before :) Discussions around threads, bluesky are a distraction to me.

Maybe you now understand why I don't really care about the growth rate of the Fediverse. Or how it could overtake BigCentralisedThing and what changes MUST be made to achieve that. I don't want the fediverse to be a better Twitter or Facebook etc. I want the fediverse to be a wonderful experience for those that value it and iterate over it to be an internet of people, not an internet of algorithms and monetisation, is all. Let's build from that position, if you agree.

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

The fediverse makes me feel better about my online presence. I define my experience here. And as I run my own instance, I also make bigger decisions like which instance gets suspended. Which users get an instance-wide block for the (currently) two users on my instance. (just to be clear, my instance is reserved for family only, I don't accept new users. I do hope you all set up many more small instances because decentralisation :)

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@TheDailyBurble Oh, my instance isn't open at all. It is reserved for family members. I booked it as a managed instance at the wonderful @mastohost and I really hope that more people set up many more mini-instances for friends and family. That's the best way to grow the fediverse. Decentralised.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@fedithom You don't know how much that means to me. Thank you!

WRT monetisation on the fediverse: You can do this without any changes to the protocol. Since a long time. You could start a little agency to provide this as a service. Here's how to for videos: Set up a peertube server. Upload videos with access limited to instance users. Use OAuth to authenticate/sync users of that peertube instance with your payment/membership service like Patreon/KoFi etc. Done.

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@cwilcox808 You are turning my argument around, but that's OK. I want to show that you can have subscriber-only content on the fediverse without forcing changes on the underlying ActivityPub protocol the way "influencers" and big, centralised players like Facebook/Meta demand.

jwildeboer, (edited )
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@cwilcox808 Which is exactly the point of threads.net who starts to discuss changes to the protocol add monetisation and ad features while they only partly implement ActivityPub themselves. If you didn't know, threads.net only supports pushing their posts to the fediverse while not accepting replies from the fediverse at all.

#WhereIsMySurprisedFace

Facebook/Meta starts talking about the "Extend" phase of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish as predicted:

"“You could imagine an extension to the protocol eventually — of saying like, ‘I want to support micropayments,’ or … like, ‘hey, feel free to show me ads, if that supports you.’ Kind of like a way for you to self-label or self-opt-in. That would be great,”

jwildeboer,
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

@Ric Sure. But getting there won’t happen overnight. That’s why I propose a pragmatic approach for a proof of concept/MVP that can iterate towards more complete and decentralised solutions. @peertube
