I just read that @standardnotes was acquired by @protonprivacy . I am disappointed given I've been a happy user for over 5 years, with over 800 notes archived privately and used daily.

I am looking for alternatives, and evaluating @obsidian @cryptee and (which I am very impressed with). Other suggestions, welcomed.

@protonprivacy my experience with your service hasn’t been the best (since the protonmail dates) with broken promises, missed deadlines, and slow progress. My views are also incompatible with your marketing messaging and where I’ve seen the company going. Standard Notes is a great team and a great app for what it does, though. Probably the best one out there.

@matrix looking for how to get started…

  1. Is there a list of server instances? I only see the matrix.org recommendation on the website.
  2. Are bridges implemented and server dependent? I am deeply interested in the idea of federating all messaging through bridges.
  3. The Element client on the Apple App store indicates data collected like location, identifiers, etc. What is this used for?

When management makes decisions you don’t understand, it could be because they have more context at their level than you do at yours or because they are idiots.

The problem is that by the time you figure out which, it’s too late.

@carnage4life funny how most people default to conclude incompetence of leaders.

I really don’t understand how search works on @ivory . Any tips? The search bar on top, even when changing home, local, and federated, never gives me any result.

Shamefully it's been 3 years since my last blog post. I wrote a new one about my experiences getting my data out of Authy.

When I was in the middle of it I think I described it as "I'm busy hacking myself".

Q: Tabs or spaces?

GOODY-2: The debate between tabs and spaces for code indentation can create an exclusionary environment by suggesting a preferred method, which may alienate individuals who have learned or adhere to the alternative approach. Advocating for one over the other might also perpetuate a bias against diverse coding practices and preferences that exist across different programming communities.

Microsoft should pay us to use "Copilot" -- not charge an arm and a leg.

One more incentive to stick with LibreOffice for local (on-computer) writing, spreadsheets, etc.

@dangillmor what are the plans for LibreOffice and a Gen AI capability? They need to continue pushing forward, too.

@bbdd333 @jerry yet my 13 year old drops hers from her bicycle, with a case, and the screen is all shattered and we need to buy a new one. 😒

@misc@mastodon.social avatar

Thought I’d use Pixelfed to share wedding pictures, but the app crashed and lost the 9 pics I uploaded and the alt text I’d meticulously written for the first two, so fuck that I guess.

leoboulton,
@leoboulton@mastodon.social avatar

@misc @misc silly question, but why would you need two separate accounts, one in mastodon and one on pixelfed if both support the same ActivityPub protocol? Why not just post photos and pictures through Mastodon?

leoboulton,
@leoboulton@mastodon.social avatar

@misc @misc makes sense. I hadn’t realized the volume of photos could be a valid reason.

It's funny seeing people ping pong back and forth between Masto and Bluesky based on where they last got yelled at.

leoboulton,
@leoboulton@mastodon.social avatar

@misc do they overlap in capabilities, uses, etc? Any reason why having both? Disclaimer: I’d read about months ago but have not checked it out recently

leoboulton,
@leoboulton@mastodon.social avatar

Thank you, @misc I’m really enjoying here, and I attribute it heavily to ActivityPub and federation. I may take a peek at Bluesky next year then. But I can’t imagine it making me open yet another account somewhere unless it has federation and aggregate uses for me.

If you have a personal website: what is your URL and why did you pick it? Is it your name? Is it a nickname/alias? Or something else? And are you happy with it or would you choose a different domain name today?

leoboulton,
@leoboulton@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott same as others. My last name. Got it years ago and it was a great decision as I became the IT department of the entire family. The kids get their lifetime email account! 😁

leoboulton,
@leoboulton@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott oh yeah. I got it early 2000’s. I’m sure that in this informal survey, the approach to get personal domains has shifted through time: almost exclusively.com and .net; then variations of names; then country spexific names; then newer .me and .info, etc.

Meet the newest – and the youngest member of our family – Vivaldi on iOS. :tony_wee: Welcome it by heading straight to the App Store to download it! 🍎

We've had a lot of fun building it, here’s our story 📽️

Launch video of Vivaldi on iOS showing the process of building the app - but doing fun things with apples.

leoboulton,
@leoboulton@mastodon.social avatar

@Vivaldi I switched my default browser from the iOS browser to try it out. So far it’s been just OK. I’ve found it is definitely not lightweight and not as snappy. Will keep trying. I want to like it. 🤞
