A typical nuclear reactor produces about 1 GW of electricity.

The Pentland Firth alone has the potential for about 4.2 GW of tidal stream power.

Waiting for the naysayers to ask me what we'll do when the moon no longer orbits the earth.

@alanferrier conservation of energy, will the additional drag/energy extraction of these devices cause increased gravitational pull on the moon and lead to it eventually no longer be receding away from earth? Genuine question.

Yeah, probably it's miniscule, probably if it happens (which I get it might not) it's millennia before there's a problem, but not seen an answer, and if it does happen, that feels civilization-ending...

lostsettler,

@alanferrier "Just cuz" isn't an answer though. Appreciate it feels like a stupid question!

@simon_brooke fair enough, we swap coastal erosion for electrons, then.

That slowing of rotation though. One face world anyone? Is that the same with wind turbines, too?

(Not a flat earther, btw, and probably even with millions of turbines it'll take hundreds of thousands of years or more, I dunno, for any appreciable effect, just not seen the maths)

Someone tell me I'll be able to turn Gemini off in android, chrome, maps and gmail please.

@fkamiah17 oh believe me, I'm reducing it more and more, it's just a matter of finding alternatives but if they embed this bollocks into everything, I'm gone.

Something is stirring in England: right to buy looks imperilled, and not a moment too soon

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/12/england-right-to-buy-thatcher-labour-leadership

My goodness. Next thing the Gruaniad will be telling us is that Scotland and Wales are getting things right and attempting to actually do something about the damage that Thatcher, her Tories and Labour have done to the whole of the UK!

It will never catch up in the paper.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen no they'll never say that because they want to put that genocide supporting fascist pig starmer into power and they think they can astroturf stupidity into those gullible scots folk to help make it happen.

Why would anyone want more of the same? Swinney if your listening, start delivering on your promises on the one issue anyone wants from you. You know, the one you literally stand for.

The Guardian view on John Swinney’s Scotland: a new start but also more of the same

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/09/the-guardian-view-on-john-swinneys-scotland-a-new-start-but-also-more-of-the-same

The Guardian gotta Guardian - ‘absolute’ facts maybe but they shy away from any serious analysis of how in many areas Scotland is doing better than the other three countries - whoops, in their words, two countries and a principality) in many areas.

Unionism with a faux-socialist coat and stinking just as badly as without the coat.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen if only there was an independence supporting news organisation that didn't require a paywall. Then we could have positive public news we could share about a future with hope.

In the meantime, don't pay the guardian and delight in the adverts bleating about it.

What's your score? Mine was over 3700 before I got bored and killed that setting.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen yep, me too, especially when they started deleting my posts saying Johnson was evil during COVID (I forget the exact reason but I think history proved me right not them)

I mean, basic truth denial.

So was a bit concerned late yesterday & this morning at rumours that London was close.

It shouldn't have been close.

It wasn't close. (yay!)

My favourite theory about why it happened is that people are just winding up the Tories on exit polling.

"What? Oh aye, I voted Conservative"

I mean, can we all do that from now on? Never actually vote Tory, but always say you have if asked when leaving polling stations.

That would be VERY funny.

18+ lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@eclectech @mrsbeanbag it would lend a normalcy to that action. If other people say they did it, then it legitimises someone thinking (!!!!!) of doing the same. (polls don't report opinion - they shape opinion)

Maybe it'd help to say you voted Green, Plaid or whatever, even if you didn't. But then you probably did so that would make the exit poll accurate again. 😕

Would saying you voted SNP in an English election help?

Ok, so I know these bastards pay for some of the harbours but really, is it worth it?

Keep their engines running destroying the climate. Clog the roads with endless trains of cyclists. Clog our streets with zombies, who dont even spend anything.

Our main town has 10,000 people. This fucker has 2,500. Nowhere could withstand a 25% population surge. Imagine if london"s population surged from ~9M to -11.5M overnight. For a single day.

18+ lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen I don't meet a single person around Orkney that isn't fed up of this shit. OIC and Harbours had better be ready for change.

We don't see a benefit to supporting this outdated toxic exploitative industry.

There's no exit polls for the London Mayoral election. The results aren't due to be announced until Saturday evening, as ballot papers have to be manually counted instead of using the electronic machines previously employed.

Although more media outlets are reporting on the narrower poll lead, I will predict that Khan will be returned with close to a 20% lead over Susan Hall.

Possibly higher if Reform have taken a chunk out of the Tory vote.

I don't think London is stupid enough to elect Hall.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@ShredderLivesOn nervous times - lots of people with brains didn't think the electorate was stupid enough to take us out of the EU.

Never underestimate stupidity.

If anyone has ever taken the trouble to read the comments (when allowed) below any article on Scotland will have realised, many, if not all, readers (they definitely seem to have done so) take a rather different view.

One more for their collection of ‘balanced articles' I suppose, along with Crace, Rowson and many more.

Most of the adverts on my TV are pointless because those brands don't exist on these islands. KFC on Orkney? Nope!

Most of the news on my TV is irrelevant. Elections in England? Nope!

Tbh, if we could UDI and become the United States Of Orkney that'd be just great. Or cos I've always wanted to go to Norway. Or realistically , as then I wouldn't have to learn a new language.

But yeah, it's going fine, thanks for asking. My health is loads better cos nothing much matters and I'm not so stressed. I've figured out how to do some things at work so that's good. I've planted things outside that haven't died although some other ones have. I've worked out what that thing on the beach is. And I didn't break the heating.

So yeah. - the best place I've ever lived. Thanks for looking after the place all this time!

Think of the billions wasted in fraud under this government. Think of the dead because UK/US wouldn't stand up against genocide. Think of the division sowed, the outrages committed against those less fortunate.

Then tell me Corbyn wasn't right.

@Roadwarrior29 it is. That place is too degraded to survive.

It's existential, I don't think everyone who lives in NI Scotland or Wales understands this.

England cannot continue. We need to leave before it drags us down with it.

You want an NHS at all? You want any protections for nature? You want any kind of social norm or contract and not live in a bad remake of "the Purge"? You want to be able to afford food?

Then your only option is independence.
