Mind bogglingly stupid. Intel invented a storage technology which ... doesn't record any persistent logs about disk failure or activity..
"Once any version of Intel® RST is installed, there are no event logs. Once Intel® RST version 17.x (and above) is installed, there is no way to get system reports. This is currently in the works by Intel engineering; however, Intel® Customer Support does not have an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for this."

: "Social media's enshittification followed a different path. In the beginning, social media presented a deterministic feed: after you told the platform who you wanted to follow, the platform simply gathered up the posts those users made and presented them to you, in reverse-chronological order.

This presented few opportunities for enshittification, but it wasn't perfect. For users who were well-established on a platform, a reverse-chrono feed was an ungovernable torrent, where high-frequency trivialities drowned out the important posts from people whose missives were buried ten screens down in the updates since your last login.

For new users who didn't yet follow many people, this presented the opposite problem: an empty feed, and the sense that you were all alone while everyone else was having a rollicking conversation down the hall, in a room you could never find.

The answer was the algorithmic feed: a feed of recommendations drawn from both the accounts you followed and strangers alike. Theoretically, this could solve both problems, by surfacing the most important materials from your friends while keeping you abreast of the most important and interesting activity beyond your filter bubble. For many of us, this promise was realized, and algorithmic feeds became a source of novelty and relevance.

But these feeds are a profoundly tempting enshittification target."

Trying to think through the current situation of #universities and #higherEducation and wondering where in the #enshittification process we are?

“Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.”

Clearly we can think of universities as platforms, where many actors plays roles of producers and consumers, users and customers.

I’m wary of nostalgia about the role universities have played in the past, and of idealized models.

But I think we may be in the middle stage - the university platform in many countries seems to have been transformed into worker-production systems where, absurdly, the proto-workers go into debt to gain credentials that allow them access to labour markets.

The business customers here are employers and lenders, who gain access to a pool of people who are financially precarious from whom to extract both labour and loan repayments.

I’m not sure universities (or many businesses, for that matter) actually reach the final stage of enshittification. Though maybe the pressure to cut costs and generate operating revenue (from tuition, often from exorbitant fees charged to international students, but also via commercialization of research) is an example of moving into the third stage?

As we all know by now, Stack Overflow has alienated their primary contributors by letting OpenAI train on SO's (CC-protected) content, and forcefully preventing countermeasures. Therefore, SO content will likely become worse and even more outdated as time goes on.

So, time to migrate. What's the preferred open source, community-run alternative to SO for everyone to migrate to? Here's one list of alternative software to run such sites:

Which site(s) are gaining traction? If none, who wants to start one?

Hello, I am a new startup!

I’m funded by venture capital and free to use.

Please come and make me valuable by using me. Make my numbers go up!

Once you do, I’ll have everything I need and I can do whatever I want with the time and effort you’ve put into making me successful.

Not happy? Fuck you, I don’t need you anymore (network effects FTW, amirite?)… I’m laughing all the way to the bank.

Goodbye!

Trello can go suck it. Trying to find an tech educator-friendly self-hosted kanban that can be deployed quickly without a ton of back-end headaches. Docker is known to me.

simon, to accessibility

So I finally contacted Google disability support about the degrading accessibility of the youTube app for iOS. I'm fairly sure I was sent there from the youTube help site. I summarized a lot of the issues I and other Voiceover users have been having with the iOS app, particularly the hellish clutter of search results and recommended videos. The response I got today directed me to write to YouTube premium support, but the page they linked to is only for help with one-time purchases or ongoing subscriptions. As an alternative, I was told to post in the community. There was no acknowledgement of the issues and no offer to pass it along. It very clearly said "You've reached the wrong place."
My interpretation of this e-mail is simple: Google disability support can't file feedback about youTube. If there is a way to do so and reach an accessibility-aware person, I have not found it.
The youTube iOS app has now degraded to the point where it's painful to use. I think this is a good nudge to move the podcast feed generator in-house (literally) and start listening to videos in Overcast. It'll also make me less unfocused and dependent on the algorithm.

The company that manages our building EV infrastructure went bust. The new one turned everyone's internet off to install their new hardware today.

Just now the building manager proudly let me know the new system is up and that I can get a charger installed. But I caught the electrician as he was packing up and he was like there's NO way you'll be able to run a cable that long, our system can't handle it.

So I'm about to have an entire conniption.

The new iPads are once again mind-blowingly amazing hardware showcases, hamstrung by software and an extractive App Store gatekeeper that limits what users can effectively do.

There is now such a large overlap of prices between iPad and MacBooks that we’ll probably never see a touchscreen Mac, because it would be a superior choice over iPad in most cases.

What I want, really, is macOS running on desktop, laptop, and tablet form factors, with a relatively open software environment not solely owned by the App Store.

I think Microsoft actually got it right with Windows 11 (minus the #enshittification ads). If only they pushed more strongly on the Surface lineup…

The Helldivers 2 furore is bonkers. If you missed it, Sony, seemingly against wishes of the dev studio, pushed to add a mandatory PSN Network sign-in months after launch on one of their biggest, most popular games on PC, and not only did the community revolt (dropping review score into the teens), but the game is now pulled from 177 storefronts and Steam are issuing refunds (as PSN only works in certain countries). The studio has told players to make their voices heard
