The Guardian view on John Swinney’s Scotland: a new start but also more of the same

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/09/the-guardian-view-on-john-swinneys-scotland-a-new-start-but-also-more-of-the-same

The Guardian gotta Guardian - ‘absolute’ facts maybe but they shy away from any serious analysis of how in many areas Scotland is doing better than the other three countries - whoops, in their words, two countries and a principality) in many areas.

Unionism with a faux-socialist coat and stinking just as badly as without the coat.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen if only there was an independence supporting news organisation that didn't require a paywall. Then we could have positive public news we could share about a future with hope.

In the meantime, don't pay the guardian and delight in the adverts bleating about it.

What's your score? Mine was over 3700 before I got bored and killed that setting.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen yep, me too, especially when they started deleting my posts saying Johnson was evil during COVID (I forget the exact reason but I think history proved me right not them)

I mean, basic truth denial.

There's no exit polls for the London Mayoral election. The results aren't due to be announced until Saturday evening, as ballot papers have to be manually counted instead of using the electronic machines previously employed.

Although more media outlets are reporting on the narrower poll lead, I will predict that Khan will be returned with close to a 20% lead over Susan Hall.

Possibly higher if Reform have taken a chunk out of the Tory vote.

I don't think London is stupid enough to elect Hall.

@ShredderLivesOn nervous times - lots of people with brains didn't think the electorate was stupid enough to take us out of the EU.

Never underestimate stupidity.

If anyone has ever taken the trouble to read the comments (when allowed) below any article on Scotland will have realised, many, if not all, readers (they definitely seem to have done so) take a rather different view.

One more for their collection of ‘balanced articles' I suppose, along with Crace, Rowson and many more.

Letters: In Praise of NHS Orkney

Dear Orkney News, My husband hurt his ankle, and when he rang the hospital was advised to go to A&E – which we did. We arrived and the Receptionist took his details very efficiently, but also in a friendly, pleasant way. Mike had only taken his coat off, when a doctor came and took him off to be checked out. She came back to get me so that we’d both be there for the procedure and instructions relating to living with his injury.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@fionaorkneynews the healthcare in Orkney is far better than anywhere else I have ever lived in the UK.

Partly this is due to the island effect, where because a service is needed it is being run even when it is not busy.

But it's also what can be done when services are properly invested in. Services that are a credit to all the staff.

Only votes for independence will allow Scotland to fund it's services like this: England is heading for health insurance, whatever - (ask Wes Streeting)

OK, I'm going to admit it. This prolonged season of storms is really bad for my mental health. I need a break from this.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke are you OK? I'm guessing western isles.

The December-January period was pretty bad here in Orkney, it felt like it'd never stop, every couple of days there would be a new storm, ferries barely left for weeks. The constant battering this place gets will get to you (I get grumpy after about 3 weeks of it, so I do understand)

It will pass eventually. You shall have the long nights and calmness in your home back again.

Chin up. 👍

It'll be summer before you know it.

Proposed Changes to Food Regulation: Share your views

Ensuring the food we buy to eat in the shops is safe to do so is regulated. Things like food additives and flavourings for example. In the past, when we were members of the EU it was that body who authorised the standards that keep us safe. Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and the Foods Standards Agency (FSA) now have that task and they have launched a joint consultation of changes they wish to make which they say will…

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@fionaorkneynews ah great, now the brexiteers want to remove food safety standards. If you don't object to this you'll end up only being able to buy adulterated unsafe food, and the minister in charge won't have to stand up and say they authorised that, thus avoiding doing their job, as always, when their job is literally to keep food safe.

Melt their inboxes, please. Takes 2 minutes.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen @fionaorkneynews it removes their accountability. Thin end of the wedge: I don't think I'm overstating anything: I can tell where this road leads.

It may not cause that immediately but it will cause it in future. No question.

A ‘heathenish liquor’? A cure for cancer? The history of coffee is full of surprises

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/apr/02/cancer-cure-history-coffee-bowel-cancer

The ills caused by coffee went beyond physical ailments, according to an anonymous pamphlet published in 1674. The Women’s Petition Against Coffee attached the “newfangled, abominable, heathenish liquor called coffee.”

@ScepticalScot1 it's grim down South.

Cut the rope so we can invest properly in our NHS Scotland (which is in a better state because of the support devolved taxation gives. It's not enough, and there will be horrible stories north of Gretna too, it's proper broken in England, at least it was this time last year when I had direct experience. and it won't have got better. P.S. the healthcare here in Orkney is fantastic and worth the minor tax burden a thousand times over)

DoomsdaysCW, to random

So, we occasionally have some mice in the house (even though we have a cat). I've worked on plugging up holes, but some still get through. Rather than use poison, I trap them in Have-A-Heart traps, then release them miles away in rural areas. It's more work than just leaving out poison, but it keeps birds of prey (and our kitty) safe from being poisoned.

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@LeftistLawyer @DoomsdaysCW hey that's an interesting comment!

Explains why I have three neutered toms and I'm forever picking up live rodents in the hallway to set free outside.

Male cats may be better rodent killers if you leave them intact. But then, who needs that smell in their house, and that kitten population explosion outside?

lostsettler,
@lostsettler@mastodon.scot avatar

@JackTheCat the thing that gets me is the false equivalence.

Preventing others from having nice sausages and cheeses: fine. Criticizing that decision, oh absolutely unreasonable, can't question the will of the people.

The fuck.

Look if you ever want non-UK investment ever again, you better join the trade bloc. Or you could become North Korea. Some choice!

Scotland can safeguard it's economic future by a full 6% (and rising every single day) by dumping Ingerlund and joining the EU.
