@evan I'm all-in for privacy but history seems to show that e2ee in federated+FLOSS+multidevice ecosystem is doomed to fail (or take decades?). XMPP fail after 20 years, Matrix is struggling too (and even if they fix all the issues, they will have to move to MLS and that will take years https://arewemlsyet.com/). Key-management is UX nightmare. GPG you suggest is obsolete.

I think fediverse/AP should better work on a protocol to negotiate/start an encrypted discussion using another e2ee protocol

@erlend it's a protocol and all implementations are open-source.

It's a simple API (few JS functions) to implement over a chat protocol to allow "widgets" or "apps" to run and sync between members of a chatroom (existing impl run on @delta and ). You could think about matrix widgets but simpler and not requiring to host anything.

@erlend yes @delta lead the design but it's designed to be protocol independant. I had a look at the spec and it looks that nothing prevent it to be implemented over matrix. So I was wondering if having such an "app" support would be useful in your vision for a discord-killer.

On my timeline, some people are saying that if you are federating with Threads, you are a terrible person.

But these folks don’t seem to have any plan for migrating people off Threads. And should they have a plan, what’s their plan for getting them to migrate to a server that de-federates Threads – and ensure they’re happy when they do it?

The ironic thing is that a lot of these “morally upright” folks came to the Fediverse during the . They benefitted from tools to make the transition easier. They used auto-crossposting, look-up sites to find their old friends, and various importing tools to help them ensure their switch to Mastodon was a success.

In other words, they benefitted from connecting their Fediverse accounts to Twitter. They can’t use these tools right now, mind you, but that’s not because Fediverse developers were so outraged by Elon Musk that they pulled the plug. No, it was Twitter that pulled the plug by entirely killing off API access.

But now that these folks “got theirs”, they want to kick the ladder off the roof. Should there be some sort of crisis on Threads – and there likely will be – what’s the migration path for Threads users to leave Threads? Why should they trust some random Fediverse server that they’ve never interacted with instead of continuing to deal with the devil they do know, Threads?

By no means am I telling you to federate with Threads. As a server operator, that decision is entirely up to you. Yet I am very skeptical that if all Fediverse servers de-federated Threads, it will make the world a better place. On the contrary, no migration path from Threads makes the world worse.

@atomicpoet 💯 I only federate with thread for one purpose: I will suggest, explain, invite, inform, help people there to ditch Meta out of their life: migrate to FLOSS, mastodon, pixelfed, Signal or whatever fit their needs.

I'm lending a hand to help people change. Zuckerberg doesn't care about me or my instance.

Also, if we everyone defederate from Threads, the DMA (that forced Meta to open) will be considered a failure, pointless, and will no longer be enforced because "nobody cares".

Si les modèles ont été entraînés à partir de Wikipédia, ils devraient être sous licence CC-BY-SA non 🤔 ? J'ai contribué à Wikipédia parce qu'il y avait cette clause. Ces modèles sont produits à partir de mes contributions. Je voudrais que Wikimedia m'aide à récupérer mon/notre dû : à quand le procès ?

@veloren I had successes moving people from Discord to @matrix. That's because, being federated, people might already have an account and won't have to to create yet-another-account on your mattermost instance to join. Veloren's matrix is already set up at -space:fachschaften.org
