The thing that nags at me with the endless “the state should run the railways!" or “we need more private firms in railways!” fight is the ideological nature of it.

Some state railways aren't very good
Some private railway firms are likewise terrible

And yes, the opposite is true as well - some state railways are excellent, and some private railways very good too

Sorry if the world doesn't fit your neat ideological frame

martincampbell2,

@jon Also overlooks various nuanced hybrid options such as private firms operating railways to a state specification on state infrastructure via competitive tender.

@kentindell The German manufacturer of my current clock radio is less reticent about why it does not ship to the UK. http://gb.teufelaudio.com/

    martincampbell2,

@kentindell Look at the list of countries the German manufacturer of my current bike ships to that does not include the UK. They do not ship to the UK since Brexit. https://www.rosebikes.com/shipping

    martincampbell2,

@kentindell You guess correctly. That is exactly what they did.

@kentindell Do Articles 5 and 6 of EU Directive 2009/24 provide any help in this situation? If not, then they need to be revisited. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2009/24/oj

If you have a bike, you should back up your encryption keys now, while you still can, before the company goes bust and shuts its servers down. https://vanoof.grossartig.io/

@kentindell There is a special schadenfreude for brits who abused freedom of movement of labour rules to spend 5 months a year in Europe but never declared any income or residence there to avoid paying tax, while fully enjoying public services. EU27 is well rid of these economic parasites.

@jon Did you see that (Dutch Wahl-O-Mat equivalent) included a question on ?
    23. European trains
The EU should invest in more cross-border European railway routes

Farage was not debanked by his UK bank because of his political views. Tens of thousands of British expats in Europe were, however, debanked by their UK banks because of Farage's political views.

Recommendations please, for the best ginger biscuits.

Assume I am aware of McVities ginger nuts, and main supermarket own brands.

    This is an important question.

    martincampbell2,

@davidallengreen Your shortlist should include Swedish pepparkakor ginger thins.

@jon Given the existing passport and security congestion at St Pancras, Gare du Nord, and Midi, where, exactly, will these new trains operate from?

Why do form creators hate punctuation?

I once had trouble with an HMRC tax return. After numerous edits I eventually worked out it didn’t like the £ symbol. Go figure.

And then there’s the time I caused havoc in a restaurant’s system when my ; triggered an SQL command…

    martincampbell2,

@kentindell @jesscourtney I remember once having lots of trouble loading a CSV list of ISO 4217 currencies that included:
    TOP,Tongan Pa’anga

What's going on with Villach 🇦🇹 - Tarvisio Boscoverde 🇮🇹

    Just 2 Railjet, 2 regional and 1 Nightjet a day? 🤔

I recall this used to be better. Are there engineering works somewhere messing this up?

    martincampbell2,

@TimWardCam @jon Train to Zermatt, Matterhorn Alpine Crossing to Breuil-Cervinia, then 30km downhill to Châtillon-Saint-Vincent.

    martincampbell2,

@TimWardCam @jon There's the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing from Zermatt, CH to Breuil-Cervinia, IT. https://matterhornalpinecrossing.com/en

    martincampbell2,

@TimWardCam @jon I've found another cross-border cablecar route. Courmayeur, IT to Chamonix Mont-Blanc, FR
