When Lily Gladstone accepted her Golden Globe for "Killers of the Flower Moon" last night, she started with a few words of thanks in the Blackfeet language. Teen Vogue explains why that's important, how streaming services did her a disservice in their captioning, and shares the whole speech.

@CultureDesk This is a tricky one, speaking as a culturally sensitive TV producer.

The goal of course is to caption everything as accurately as possible, including languages other than English.

On the practical side, it's really hard to get right on live TV. Much captioning is still done by humans, & they can only type what they understand or that is translated for them.

Captioners we work with are careful to display "[speaking native language]" if they know it's local but can't be specific.

@CultureDesk I don't know if the 'Globes have the text of acceptance speeches in advance to have available for captioning. I suspect that they don't, in which case it's a comparable situation to any language that the captioner doesn't understand, you can't blame the captioner.

One solution is for the producers to try and get more advanced info on what'll happen & have the resources ready.

Of course, if the captions should be typed as spoken, or translated; is the really significant question.

@CultureDesk We had one none-live (that makes a difference) project where Yup'ik was spken in an otherwise English video. We went to great lengths to have the dialogue transcribed, and then translated to English

In the final video we ran both captions with Yup'ik on the upper line & English on the lower line in sync. It was really hard to get the spacing & timing to both line up and be readable.

We probably spent 5 hours to get a 2-minute segment right. But it was worth it, because it matters.

I recently noticed that the State of Illinois has changed the font of the stamping on license plates.

The design is the same, but the stamped text is a bit thinner and the glyphs are blockier.

I am surprised how much this change is bothering me, to be honest. It has never occurred to me how much that is a defining feature. The first one I saw I assumed had to be fake!

@sundogplanets The rumor is that aurora make sound.

Well, I can confirm that once again I can tell from the sound* that the aurora must be amazing tonight.

*The sound is the rain pounding on our windows for the 3rd day straight. 🙄

"This year’s state operating budget included $1 million for the Department of Administration to study whether state salaries should be increased. The department said it intends to hire an outside firm to conduct that study;"

"Yes."

There, I just saved the State of Alaska a million dollars.
