Hoo boy I have some Publishing Thoughts but it's a Sunday.

This is a Good Thing, I really should calm down before I write about this. Yet I'm over here just absolutely floored (again) by how bonkers this industry is becoming.

I mean, it was ALWAYS bonkers, but it's getting...yeah. Whew.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but ideas are cheap. Ideas are everywhere. The ether teems with them, millions in every mote of dust or drop of water.

What's expensive is the discipline, energy, and work to turn an idea into a piece of art.

Ideas feel good, though! They're like tribbles. They love you, they purr, they make you feel good.

Side note: every long-term pro writer I know understands the feeling of "drowning in tribbles."

So outrage-seekers have discovered the National Trust’s scones are vegan. As a Trust member for nearly 40 years, diagnosed with cow’s milk protein intolerance over 30 years ago I can confirm dairy-free scones and cakes have been available for years. No one else ever seems to notice, and it makes solid business sense to cater for every potential customer when income from tea rooms supports the Trust’s work. (continues)

The xz hack is still inflicting pain. I can't help them.

What I can do is offer a discount on "$ git commit murder," which has a plot thread suspiciously like the xz hack. Also good on the sequel, "$ git sync murder."

Coupon code "xzhack" gets you 50% off these titles in ebook at my store.

Good April Fools' pranks are benign violations of expectations, done with love and kindness.

The prankee should neither feel fear nor have to spend time cleaning it up.

Unless they laugh so hard that they pee. That's a special kind of win.

Vultr backed down, but so what?

https://mwl.io/archives/23504

Rights grabs are becoming more common, though. I believe that the only way to stop them is to stop doing business with any company that attempts one. Backing down from a rights grab is too late.

tedu, to random

I'm willing to believe vultr made the incompetent, as opposed to malicious, fuckup of copying extravagent text into their TOS as part of the annual review and update to the latest boilerplate process, but also, how hard is to do so competently? Even as a mistake, you care so little for your customers you're not going to read the terms you make them agree to? The ones you (allegedly) wrote?

mwl,
@mwl@io.mwl.io avatar

@tedu

It might have been incompetence, yes.

But everyone's hypervigilant on AI rights grabs these days, and failing to be aware of that is epic incompetence.
