I have recently been trying to engage with posts in languages which I don’t speak fluently. It’s terrifying; I’m certain I’ll accidentally say something silly or offensive. I remind myself that this is how a lot of people must feel most of the time, having to use English because it’s so often the default online language.

@CerstinMahlow @gimsieke @tmalsburg @linguacelta If you use it for various language pairs, you may want to consider my “fork” (I just haven’t gotten around to do proper pull requests), which has commands for setting the language pair per buffer, and also change the formality setting.

Another first: booked an appointment for physiotherapy online (the booking, not the physio). At a French-speaking facility of a large nationwide chain, so the website was in German (uff!). Anyway, I have to recap body parts in French before Tuesday

The site lists 5 therapists, all looking under 30, none of them speaking a second national language. Unless they’re foreign-educated, they all learned a second national language at school. For 8 years. Go figure

Hoffentlich unterschätzt man diesen täter nicht wie damals den, der hier versucht hat, die tankstelle anzuzünden.

Für rollenspiele gibt’s bestimmt auch würfel von 4,5 bis 6 in viertelschritten.

Frage für eine kollegin, der ein ganzer tag mündliche prüfungen mit jeweils 5 minuten dazwischen (und einer großzügig auf 30 min «verlängerten» «mittagspause») bevorsteht.

It is with great regret that we mark the passing of programming language pioneer and A.M. Turing Laureate Niklaus Wirth, who passed away on Jan 1, 2024. Wirth created the Euler and PL360 languages. Working with Tony Hoare, Wirth used Euler as the basis of Algol-W which then became the basis for Pascal, which provided a foundation for future computer languages, systems, and architectural research for years to come. https://bit.ly/3jsDb6y
