There’s a new townhome community going in near us. I looked at the floor plans. One would be a great fit for us and our needs. It starts at $1M. Hubs and I imagined, planned, then laughed at how fucked millennials are if we want to own actual property.

nillyrobot,

@RocketMamaJesse I've been having a sad laugh at the 80k+ houses around here that maybe come with part of a roof, if you're lucky. Anything under 150k is a fixer-upper, and by that they mean "hope you own your own contracting company."

nillyrobot,

@RocketMamaJesse Oy. What a mess.

So we get to the end of the semester and I come down with another inner ear infection, causing hearing loss, minor balancing trouble and pain. Coincidence? I think my body will be happy to be out of this job!

Fortunately I got some steroids from the urgent care doc. FYI: You have 3 days for the optimal result to prevent permanent hearing loss. I hadn't fully recovered from the previous bout yet.

I hear hearing aids come in funky colours these days 😕

nillyrobot,

@tinebeest Ah, I'm sorry to hear that. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

nillyrobot,

@tinebeest That's rough. They really ought to have emergency diagnosis!

Alright, well this is going to be character art at some point, but I got distracted by gothic architecture, lol

This I'll be hanging out on the balcony with my carpenter bee friends. They're pretty well used to us, and do a good job chasing off other, more aggressive species.

(Although, there was a hive of paper wasps last year that got pretty comfortable with us too-- plants, food, and fresh water around chill them out a lot!).

nillyrobot,

@SJHoodlet Oh yes. I still have a lot of nervousness with them too! They can be quite cranky and I definitely don't want to encounter one in a car! Our experience last year helped me a lot, since I always saw them pollinating our tomatoes and they mostly got over us being around. Now that we're up on the third floor though, I'm very thankful for our little pack of chill bees that chase the wasps off. We're a little too high up to be running away, haha...

nillyrobot,

@scribblejournal Yep! The big fluffy guys that come stare at you. The males will sometimes try to be tough guys and dive bomb you. That's pretty much all they got though. I don't believe males have stingers. They start ignoring you after a while once they get used to you being there.

So here's a neat thing that went on to inspire one of my characters.

Haserot's Angel (real title: "The Angel of Death Victorious") is an iconic grave marker in the incredibly scenic and beautiful Lakeview Cemetary (Cleveland, Ohio). Age and rain have caused streaks down the bronze face that makes for striking imagery.

I spent a lot of time in Lakeview as a kid and I always loved visiting this statue.

nillyrobot,

Creepy-cool weathering aside, the sculpting on that statue is a masterwork. It's an incredibly beautiful piece.

Side note, I've always been so enamored with it that my mother bought me a fridge magnet for one of my birthdays, haha.

I'm going to drop Latin in . It requires too much information and basic information the course has zero interest in teaching.

Welsh had certain issues, but at least there were actual course materials on grammar! Latin just goes, "here are some basic sentences, it's your fault if we teach something we didn't bother listing her."

Any suggestions for Latin courses that aren't Duolingo?

nillyrobot,

@PaxAsteriae I'd be interested to know too, if you find a decent one!

1. Intro. Share 3 fun facts about your favorite side character.

"Jupiter Lane" is a horror-comedy about radio monsters, nightmares, and friendship.

Arturo Torres (47), Holy Thaumaturge of Plain Hills, Plain Hills Heights, and associated municipalities

  1. Not clear if he's actually a wizard or just thinks he is.

  2. Has lived out of an RV for the past three years chasing leads on the valley.

  3. Claims the colander he wears has high magical resonance and protects him from evil.

nillyrobot,

12. Do you think your story will make your readers cry at some point?

Assuming I don't completely botch it, there's a good chance. I regularly make myself cry writing it anyway, haha, but the whole thing is rather cathartic for me and explores some personal struggles. Mileage may vary.

I will say, there are many emotional daggers that find bittersweet or even hopeful resolutions. That kind of thing always gets to me, so maybe others will feel the same.

13. Share a description of a secondary character.

From Phantasmagory:

Terry Alvarez is a simple soul who only wants to tend his bees and pretend that none of this is happening to him.

(If you're not feeling horror, the aesthetic is a little bit like the Vashta Nerada from Doctor Who, but bees)

CW: horror, description of mild-mannered bee monster

nillyrobot,

@crcollins Thanks! I like the contrast between what he looks like and how he acts.

nillyrobot,

@Saposcat He's a fun character. I enjoy the contrast, haha.

nillyrobot,

14. MC POV: Have you ever broken anyone’s heart?

"Seems to be about all I'm good for. I've been breaking hearts and ruining lives since the day I was born. Hell, one's sitting in the other room right now, shocked I ain't dead in a ditch somewhere. Anyway, why are you dragging up all that for? Don't you got nothing better to do?"

nillyrobot, (edited )

15. Is your MC good at romantic relationships?

Oh lord no. They're all a mess.

Christopher wanders into hasty relationships of convenience that inevitably crash and burn.

Nick lets people do whatever they want to him. They usually find an excuse to drop him shortly after. The mother of his child hates him. His longest lasting relationship ended when his boyfriend abruptly disappeared.

Frankie was always the "weird girl" who people mostly avoided and hasn't dated anyone yet.

nillyrobot,

17. Secondary character POV: do you trust the MC? Why / why not?

"Trust...? Are you serious right now? Oh, am I supposed to trust Freddy Kruger, too? Are we going to hug it out with Leatherface?

That monster's the whole reason we're trapped here and he's got those other two delusional morons wrapped around his little finger."

nillyrobot,

@zicon Thanks! 😊

nillyrobot,

@PaxAsteriae 😁😁

nillyrobot,

19. If they knew who you were, would your MC save your life?

Absolutely not. And it wouldn't even be on purpose either.

They'd probably be too busy debating ethics at each other, and while they were arguing the bear would finish eating me or whatever else was happening.

(They have a slightly better track record in-story, but not by much…)

nillyrobot, (edited )

20. Do illicit substances play any role in your story?

Hmm. Not exactly, but Christopher spends the first part of 'Phantasmagory' convinced he's being drugged, since everyone is some kind of horrible nightmare person and the town looks like a surrealist painting.

That's a pretty typical reaction to the valley though, especially in that era.

nillyrobot,

21. MC POV: If you had to give your younger self a piece of advice, what would it be?

"Never give up on your dreams! You never know when they'll come true, 😉"

"Leave the state. Pack up and move the hell away from here as soon as you can."

"Haha, your brother's going to frame you for murder, you should probably push him down a flight of stairs while you still have plausible deniability, ahaha. No, I'm kidding, no, no! That was a joke! Don't, uh… don't do that."

nillyrobot, (edited )

22. Do you prefer writing the first or last chapters?

Well, you know I'm still a baby writer, so it's hard to make a call on that. It seems like I prefer writing the first chunk and then random pieces all over the plot that start to knit together after a while.

I generally know where I want to end up, but most of what I've actually written ends kind of abruptly. So that's probably something. 🤷‍♀️
