It calls the concept of a "stochastic parrot" a "deepity" (q.v. @timnitGebru, @emilymbender).

But its main thesis that AIs have true intelligence and understanding, while not necessarily wrong, is itself a deepity. Who am I to say that a machine has or not a mind? For that matter, who am I to say that another human has or not a mind?

From my own subjective experience, these are unfalsifiable theses.

Worse, discussion of whether an AI has true intelligence and understanding is a red herring that distracts from the very real harms that AI are causing (to the environment, to our information ecosystem, to actual humans).

If I am not a solipsist, these are the things that I care about, not whether AIs are Echo and respond in kind.

Giving Scarlett Johansson's voice to ChatGPT was unconscionable.
