<Mastodon native profile> Editor, breaking/trending news. I am not The New York Times; I just work there. Observer. Reporter. Writer. Zen Buddhist. Chess player. Cyclist. Music lover. Constant reader. Tech geek. Podcast fan. Fact-based. Pro-science. Anti-bigot. Imperfect human, just like you.

Mastodon is the only site where a user is guaranteed to gripe about a paywalled article every time. Folks, ads are dead. Subscriptions pay for the journalism and feed our families. A trial sub is cheap. I give away a lot of free links. You can read many with an email (regi-wall is not a paywall). It is easy to get around with research. You do you. Just don’t reply with a complaint or a paywall evasion. It’s kind of rude. I may block you. Move on. Read something else. It’s a big old internet.

palafo,

@glennf I can post lots of free NYT but it is a bit of work, especially on my phone, and it’s after midnight and nobody’s paying me to be on this platform… Apple News is a great deal, though ugly and annoying IMO. I pay for it, WaPo, NYT in print, New Yorker, podcasts, many other sources at my own expense. I also hit a lot of paywalls. Oh well. I move on.

palafo,

@stefanm Micropayments don’t work, or have not so far. We don’t offer them for that reason. Our “leaky paywall” is profitable and pays for a lot of expensive journalism. People value it or they don’t. Do what works for you. No hard feelings. But this is how we do it.

palafo,

@stefanm Yes, they tried it through an outside platform, in Europe. It failed. The problem is it does not provide enough $ to pay salaries or buy equipment or pay for travel or even keep the lights on. This way works. It does leave some out, but there are many news outlets, libraries, certain # of free articles etc. We know our business.

palafo,

@stefanm We’d have to charge $20 an article or something if it was all micropayments. With subs, you as one user can get it all for months at that price — it scales with a lot of customers. It’s like how cable TV is cheap compared to paying for 20 streaming services or pay per view for every episode. But there is space for many models. It just doesn’t support what we do at our scale — 1,800 journalists around the world

palafo,

@gamingonlinux @chasalin @ReneeWestberry Oh, I love Mastodon. I just want people to change this one thing! It's not too much to ask. Also, I'm mostly just amusing myself with this thread.

I am getting ratio’d on Threads for saying it kind of sucks there. Ok, that was a bit combative. Most replies say they find Mastodon “too hard” and they get less engagement. Not my experience here. But with 100 plus million users I fear it will be the Xitter replacement — and May swamp the Fediverse AOL on Usenet Endless September style if they ever do fully integrate as an instance

Deleted BlueSky. It didn’t give happiness. ActivityPub does.

palafo,

@jwildeboer I have had some fun there but wish it was just an instance

Anyway, “Fart” is in the NYT Spelling Bee dictionary, but “Turd” is not.

palafo,

@agiletortoise So many inexplicable choices. (Also: Hello. I love Drafts.)
