I doubt anyone on mastodon cares, but I am so pissed that Jen won the Great Canadian Potter. Elsa was BY FAR the better potter and artist. Ridiculous.

If anyone is wondering about my stance on this issue: MAID is horrible. The whole system is wrong and should be ended. It was wrong for the courts to send us down this path and it was wrong for the government to enact this regime.

People's failure to understand that fascism is a fairly banal worldview reflects a refusal to understand how common and ordinary looking it is and how well it hides behind our modern high tech lifestyles.

Fascism doesn't have to have 1930s pomposity and daily military parades.

It can look like America, right now, today, depending on who and where you are. America already has military jingoism, mass incarceration, mass surveillance, unchecked paramilitaries, and theocrats denying our rights.

peepstein,
@peepstein@mstdn.social avatar

@gwynnion this isn’t a uniquely American phenomenon. It’s common across the West: in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc. certainly in non English-speaking countries as well. We all probably know some people who believe this, even if we don’t realize it.

Sometimes I read a news article with quotes in it, that just makes me shake my head with sadness, at the kind of prejudice and hate that some people still believe: “"While the word 'abuse' is thrown around quite a bit, it is not uncommon for people to have parents who yell at them and call them names," said Engley. "Most people I know are scared of their dads."”

The fact that this was an argument presented by a prosecutor, should result in some form of discipline for the prosecutor.

This article is absolutely infuriating. It shows how you can find out something empirically true and then use your own biases to explain how and why it’s true, without doing any of the work to prove cause and effect. And the journalists who share your biases will gladly publish this drek to perpetuate your prejudice.

According to the Zeiss prescription checker website for AVP, my prescription is unavailable for optical inserts.

peepstein,
@peepstein@mstdn.social avatar

I looked into this again and it seems the variable I could change to get inserts is just my OS sphere. I’m really surprised that ZEISS can’t make higher index, aspheric lenses for their AVP inserts — they can certainly make them for spectacles! My current glasses have essilor high index, aspheric lenses and they’re the thinnest they’ve ever been. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@gruber @Finin now THAT’S a blast from the past. Dreamweaver did a lot of cool things, but you still needed to know what you were doing to get the most benefit out of it. Also, some of its utility was folded into Photoshop, like generating image maps from you slicing up an image. I used to build sites with these tools and for visual designers/thinkers, they were amazing.

Care to weigh in here?

peepstein,
@peepstein@mstdn.social avatar

@georgetakei it’s possible that this husband doesn’t know much about financial planning and doesn’t know how to arrange the finances accordingly in the context of a family unit. It’s also possible that the OP doesn’t know these things, and that the husband has set up retirement accounts in the spouse’s name, or other kinds of savings accounts that benefit the OP in ways she isn’t aware of. If the OP has these conversations with the husband and he flies off the handle and clams

peepstein,
@peepstein@mstdn.social avatar

@georgetakei then she should give him a chance to get some counselling and if that doesn’t work, separate and get a lawyer to assist in a divorce.
