My lips are tingling because I ate a piece of cabbage off the chopping board. Upon which I had sliced the habaneros. Should be a good stir-fry I reckon.

Get you some mushrooms with actual flavour

@jpm what coffee filters are for.

pelicangut,
@pelicangut@aus.social avatar

@jpm have you seen what's available at a good Chinese grocer? Not just shiitake, they often have chanterelle, morel, blazei, bamboo fungus (really funky!), monkey head / lion's mane, tea tree, velvet antler, nameko. Great flavours.

Of course, also snow fungus and black fungus, but they're more for texture than flavour.

Not getting me to try the cordyceps any time soon though.

@luciedigitalni yum! Hard agree on Maesri for store bought ready-to-roll paste. We use a couple in our lunch noodle soups, or otherwise Penta instant Tom Yum. 🤤

There's not enough aged care workers as it is. Keeping people in the home is actually going to put more stress on workers. And it will continue to reduce efficiency of the housing market with elderly people staying in homes far too large for them.

pelicangut,
@pelicangut@aus.social avatar

@luciedigitalni

Home-based care is not a replacement for aged care homes. Not unless it means someone in the house 24/7 to help with toileting etc. Ask you friendly fire brigade and ambulance folks for more details.

(when someone falls, it's often the fire brigade who have to pick them up for the ambos)

Why do some people still hyphenate "e-mail"?

WHY?

pelicangut,
@pelicangut@aus.social avatar

@luciedigitalni it's very en-AU / en-NZ to not hyphenate "email". And it's not the only exhyphenation we do;

More stories about beaches and food

I got a little taken with the dining on the beach at sunset concept when I arrived here. It is bloody special but it's also probably not where the best, and certainly not the best value, food is. Surprisingly, the prices here don't vary much/at all between on the beach and on the main road, certainly for food and massages, though they do for rooms, of course.

I was also a bit spoiled with my first sunset dinner - a fabulous red duck curry which has been the dining highlight of the trip so far.

I liked it so much I went back the next night and had fried pork belly (tiny bit dry but very yummy) and a creamy Tom Kha Gai, which needed a bit more (some!) chilli but still lovely.

The next night, having found some pedals to hire, I went on a little adventure to another beachside restaurant at the next beach for a decent (not spicy enough) pork larb, and...

1/2

blue tablecloth with a plate of rice, a plate of fried pork belly, a glass and a bottle of soda water
that blue tablecloth again, this time with a bowl of creamy Tom Kha Gai (coconut) soup and the same glass and bottle of soda water
a red tablecloth and a plate of pork larb (minced pork salad) with some styled cucumber slices

pelicangut,
@pelicangut@aus.social avatar

@luciedigitalni I've always thought the concept of a pork Massaman curry would be sort-of sacrilegious (Massaman = mosalman = muslim), but I accidentally ordered one at my "local" Thai (the Thai Bar in Hamilton, NSW). They said no 🙂

Glad to hear you're enjoying Thailand, horrified to think that a "middle spicy" might require remediation 🔥

    I love* government websites that will provide a whole page of information about how to access an online service but will either not include an actual link to the service or will make it as difficult to find as possible

    I’m very sick of paying for streaming services only to not be able to watch shows until months after the US. Complete bullshit in this day and age. Do they actually want us to pirate shows instead of paying for them?

    pelicangut,

    @feather1952 @dropbear @luciedigitalni and anyway, who doesn't like another good cross-border thriller?

    Some of SBS is truly awesome and I simply can't recommend due to the strong {waves hands... everything} that will make half my family and all of my wife's family either blush or faint. Top notch viewing, can't recommend 👍 (e.g. Paris Police 1900/1905)

    At some point last year my phone just stopped working, as in wouldn't turn on. So I bought a new one.

    I just found the allegedly broken one in a drawer, plugged it in and it's working perfectly.

    As pleasing as this discovery is, I would have preferred to know it two weeks ago before I replaced the replacement which fell out of my pocket while riding my bike and smashed the screen.

    It's just as well I don't buy expensive phones

    pelicangut,
    @pelicangut@aus.social avatar

    @luciedigitalni My 80+ Dad had a phone that wouldn't charge, and then [something something] and he bought a new phone. Fast forward a couple of years, and a home care worker found the old non-charging phone up the back of the fridge behind something awful. Dad gave it to me, "see if you can get it to work". Works fine if you plug in the charge cable perfectly, otherwise it won't charge.

    A mystery how it got into the fridge, wasn't looked for, stayed there a couple of years, WTF was in the nasty it was hiding behind, etc.

    @luciedigitalni I tried using dad's windows 11 laptop on Wednesday night to help him submit something to Centrelink. Fucksake what a palaver. Ads coming at me, Adobe constantly asking me about starting a free trial, smart trackpad switching to keypad mode at worst moment. Hospital wifi blocking download of any useful tools didn't help.

    Brought files home and sorted out in Linux, without nags. All tools I wanted available. Output file about a tenth the size as that on windows so that all required files fit within Centrelink 10mb upload limit (i.e. only 2mb altogether)

    I don't know how Windows users put up with it.
