A guide to good eating along the light rail and streetcar lines that connect Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. Other subjects of occasional commentary include slow cycling, desert hiking, and Sun Belt urbanism.

This is getting a little out of hand. I just ordered something from Amazon and they’d like Bluetooth access to help make setup of my new purchase easier.

It’s a fricking tool shed.

NOT a smart tool shed, either.

@LoneLocust I got that prompt for a bike light I ordered. I'm not even sure what they want bluetooth access to -- the computer or the light itself (assuming it even has bluetooth, which I doubt).

The new rail extension over I-17 not only looks great, especially at night, but it has some invisible innovation within its structure: https://www.statepress.com/article/2024/02/scitech-fiber-reinforced-concrete

It has been a good week here in due to these three developments:

  1. Air France announced new nonstop flights between Sky Harbor and Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

  2. The city council approved long overdue parking reforms, halving the amount required for apartments near light rail.

  3. The Northwest Phase II light rail extension opened, bringing the total miles of track to 30 between MetroCenter and Mesa.

2024 will bring many challenges, but January has been promising so far.

Looks like they’re opening a Two Hands Corn Dogs near the light rail station at Northern and 19th. (Soon, not yet.)

@LoneLocust They already have locations near stations in Tempe and Mesa. I've avoided the Mesa one because it has no tables or chairs for on-site eating.
Customers either eat in their cars, which is uncivilized and assumes travel by car, or they invade the H Mart food court, taking away seats from people who actually buy their meals from the vendors operating there.

The Tempe location on Rural appears to have some limited seating. I hope the 19th Ave / Northern location follows that model.

I can remember a decade ago when the curbside service of FlixBus and similar companies was viewed as cool and modern in comparison to Greyhound's fixed terminals.

Now that Flixbus owns Greyhound and terminal buildings are being sold, it seems like people are realizing that even sketchy stations are better than long waits outside.

Delighted to see Valley Metro running three-car trains at high frequency today. Wish this were all the time rather than just for the World Series.

phxrailfood,
@phxrailfood@epicure.social avatar

@LoneLocust Think so. Downtown garages are already charging special event rates rather than normal hourly prices.

phxrailfood,
@phxrailfood@epicure.social avatar

@LoneLocust That should be while the game is in progress and might actually be the ideal time. The long trains will be running, but the fans will be in the ballpark.

    @LoneLocust Yes, the original one in Chandler seems to be sticking with original name. I suspect the two restaurants have parted ways, necessitating different brand identities.

    phxrailfood,

    @LoneLocust Yes, it sounds rather generic and even borderline stereotypical for a place that serves a distinctive and authentic regional cuisine.

    @LoneLocust Although I've enjoyed my recent meals there, I have heard that opinion from another Chou's fan.
