If you’re on a different instance than 196 and you can see downvotes on a post, those are literally only from other accounts on your instance! When they get sent to Blahaj they get dropped from the database entirely, then when other instances ask for an updated tally, Blahaj just replies zero :D

Your local instance will treat it’s own downvote count as valid despite the 0 reply, hence only seeing local downvotes.

Trans people on reddit would often get downvoted to oblivion for seemingly no reason. It happened to me on occasion, with comments that were otherwise benign, non-controversial and at least tangentially on-topic. Like fair enough if they stayed at 1 but these would be at -5 or lower. And always on posts in default/major subreddits too. This stuff was done systematically to silence trans users by having their comments hidden from low vote total. Because actually posting hateful comments would just get reported and removed in those large spaces, and this goes undetected.

Now imagine a trans Instance like Blahaj, dealing with the potential of a new instance showing up just to downvote members, and that happening, over and over. No comments, just downvotes. That’s why Blahaj has them disabled.

Hey, did you know that Facebook is partially* responsible for a more recent genocide? So, considering TikTok’s ties to the Chinese government, which is also known to commit genocides, I’m gonna go ahead and say this is probably a good thing.

Edit: changed because Facebook just incited it, people are responsible for their own actions.

Have you like, talked, to a teenager or early 20 year old at all during the last three years? Either you don’t understand the huge cultural impact tiktok has had for that age group, or you think every single person that age is a β€œvertical video crazy”.

It had some glaring missing features when I started using it last year (like not* rendering spoilers) but it’s come a long way and gets actively worked on. I don’t think you’re missing out, but if you aren’t already in the Testflight Beta then that might scratch the itch of having the bleeding edge.

There are some pseudo-standards for it. Github-flavoured markdown is probably the biggest of them. Then you get things like Obsidian-flavoured markdown that is based off of Github’s.

Five quick presses of the lock button does this too, but beware as I think the default behaviour also starts a 3 second countdown to calling emergency services.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah I just tested it and you’re right it’s a way faster way to get to power off. Personally prefer the five lock presses as it requires way less dexterity in your pocket. I’ve just disabled the auto-call feature.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

There’s a setting to disable the call, I just did it that long back I wasn’t sure if that’s still the default.

WPATH standards of care actually require a doctor to continue to do things like monitoring levels for patients that opt for DIY. I’ve checked with my doctor already if I wanted to switch to DIY shots and she’d be fine to continue to monitor things.

the time zone this meme came from.

What does this even mean? You know that like, people exist and are awake outside of the US while y’all are up right? lol

Did you know that 8am EST is 6pm AEST (Australia)?

Anthony Albanese has praised a lone police officer who pursued a man on a stabbing spree through a shopping mall, saying β€˜there is no doubt that she saved lives through her action’ (www.theguardian.com)

The senior officer, Amy Scott, was conducting routine duties nearby when she was directed to head to Westfield shopping centre following reports a man was using a β€œmassive” knife to stab shoppers....

I wouldn’t feel very comfortable with a low police presence.

Are you Indigenous Australian? A person of colour? LGBTQ? Homeless? A drug addict?

Because from my experiences, these groups tend to feel most comfortable when there’s a lower police presence. And I think their experiences should be considered as just as important as yours.

I’m not sure what the alternative to police would be, something like the second amendment in the US?

You’ve got to be joking, right? Personally, I’d rather not start seeing local school shootings on the evening news. It’s hard enough hearing about the ones in the States. Let alone how much more trigger-happy their cops are due to fearing that any person they interact with may have a concealed gun on them.

I’d go the opposite direction. Take guns off regular uniformed police. That’s how it is in London. De-escalate the threat of violence and bad people are likely to do the same. Wouldn’t you pick a bigger knife if you knew the people showing up in response would have guns?

I think the solutions needed are social ones. Victoria built, and is building, sobering up centres. They are staffed by nurses and social workers, and have drug and alcohol counselling available as well as being able to do referrals to other services. Increasing these sorts of services and improving social safety nets and public housing all have negative effects on the crime rate.

me:

Reducing those powers and shrinking the force has more benefits than not doing so or allowing their power and sizes to continue to balloon.

you:

I wouldn’t feel very comfortable with a low police presence.

me:

Because from my experiences, these groups tend to feel most comfortable when there’s a lower police presence.

you:

My solution would be a much, much smaller police force

I literally already said that but alright mate.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Mate it was because you said β€œMy solution” and then basically repeated what I had suggested 3 comments earlier as if it was your own idea. Rather than admitting on any level that I may have been right earlier. That’s not a debate, that’s just bad faith.

princessnorah,
@princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Even if you don’t believe the police should stop existing, it’s undeniable that they’ve systematically lobbied for more and more powers, which disproportionately affect minorities and the poor. Reducing those powers and shrinking the force has more benefits than not doing so or allowing their power and sizes to continue to balloon.

This is from my first comment in this thread, I bolded the relevant section for you this time.

I was under the impression that you didn’t want police at all

I don’t, but I’m willing to compromise to get there. I also do believe that disbanding the police force overnight would cause more harm than good, it’s not the path we should take. Systems need to be developed to slowly replace their functions with ones that don’t cause the same harm. I don’t know what all of those systems would look like. But more than once I’ve joked with friends that we should get little old grandma’s out there doing breathos, who’ll lovingly shame you into alcohol counselling.
