Deliberately eclectic.

I like making stuff with code and getting people to come along with me. Things are more fun with friends.

I got 3 tricks to being a better engineering manager:

  • tell less, model more; when you can't model, tell stories, not orders
  • focus on driving the outcome, not so much every step along the way
  • catch people doing stuff right—and make sure others know about that

“If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” - Edwards Deming.

This is a myth.

The actual quote is "It is wrong to suppose that if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it—a costly myth."

The most dangerous part is that people see the word "manage" and assume it must be a quote about managing the performance of people.

It's not. It's about process.

Read any good books lately?

Things no one will mention at your funeral:

  • participated in standups
  • increased to shareholder value
  • got in expense report on time all the time
  • had 90% code coverage on all PRs
  • clocked your time on time all the time

This is not an exhaustive list by any means.

An idea has taken me.

It's a simple one: coding skills can be trained like muscles.

Coding skills can be lost or degraded if neglected. This implies you must do something to maintain them.

We all know that Leetcode skills are relevant to a very tiny subset of the relevant skills, but they're very hard.

I'd guess that most devs will tackle a Leetcode style problem in about 1% of their total time.

So it's something, but what's the 99% like?

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@tshirtman yeah, that's going in the right direction, I think.

The challenge is how do I know how to even practice those things, much less understand if I'm improving.

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@tshirtman Yeah maybe…. part of me also thinks that this is maybe a bit more like math, and there are certain disciplines:

  • algebra
  • geometry
  • number theory
  • combinatorics
  • game theory
  • topology

Basically, yeah, it’s all programming, but within each discipline there are THE things that matter the most to that specific field, and it’s not generalizable to other fields.

Spend a day planning. Save a year of coding.

Spend a day coding. Save a year planning.

There is no science to figuring out which case you’re in.

Only art.

More than productivity.
More than quality of life.

If you're in Paris, TX and you make toast, is it Texas Toast or French Toast?

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson porque no los dos?

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson but then a new question....French Texas Toast or Texas French Toast....or Texan French Toast?

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson now I'm going to take a piece of big fluffy bread and drench it in salty butter and then batter it and fry it this weekend....then I'm going to take a picture of it and tag it as French -Tex Toast.

Then I'll eat it and die from a heart attack from consuming 20k calories in a single bite....but it'll be worth it.

Is it just or did something flip in Google in the past year or so?

Google seems to be making progressively insane decisions like shutting down their Python contributors along with shuttering Google Domains... while launching stinkers like Google Vids

It feels like they're speedrunning to become IBM.

It's also ok to like what you do.

Both of these don't get said together often enough.

Played around with DuckDB over the weekend.

Pulled in Parquet data from an S3 bucket using DuckDB's native support for that. Immediately queried of the data with standard SQL syntax.

My mind went a thousand directions with the implications for web apps.

What movie do you love that everyone else tends to be meh about?

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

I'll go first: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

I can defend this choice a bunch of ways: a multi-layer character development story, strong theme, fantastic editing and cinematography, a banger music selection.

I've watched it easily 20 times, and there's no other movie I've watched nearly as much. I rarely watch a movie more than once.
