Deliberately eclectic.

I like making stuff with code and getting people to come along with me. Things are more fun with friends.

People over value efficiency and under value NOT doing things.

The task it takes you 0 hours to do 0 times, because you said “No” has an immediate payback period.

Literally nothing important to me has ever come from any of my New Year's resolutions.

And yet I still do reflect on the last year and plan for the next one....

I clearly have a problem....

Doing meaningful work requires seeing the whole picture.

To do a large scale work, we assume it involves lots of people shredding it down into a small pieces.

So we cut a van Gogh into confetti and hand them out, and we wonder why the people with the scrap of gray don’t understand where they fit in.

"Write software x way. Or you're doing it wrong."

I used to subscribe to this.

There are no best practices. There are likely good and bad practices, but more likely there are appropriate and inappropriate practices.

I'd argue for a good set of defaults potentially too.

Alright, after all this talk of ketchup/catsup, I need to know:

What are the Top 5 Condiments you have to have in your kitchen?

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I'm going to start some fights:

Top 5 by usage
Salt
Pepper
Garlic Powder
Crystal Hot Sauce
Ketchup

There are no best practices. No one size fits all. No universally applicable principles, including this one.

Infrastructure as code (with being the best implementation) has been a massive game changer for making infrastructure something that can be easily inspectable. I love it, and I refuse to ever work again without it.

Don't try to engineer systems to prevent errors.

Assume failure and make it safe.

You think confidently wrong ignorant people are difficult to work with?

Try to have a conversation with someone who is confidently wrong with old information.

In theory they should just update their priors. But I've often found they've spent so much time arguing based on it that they've failed to leave open room to new information, and so it's been crystalized into dogma.

This was inevitable, wasn’t it?

@hynek considering how few went to jail after 2008/2009...no, it unfortunately wasn't a given.

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@hynek oh the good guy is actually the bad guy; yeah, that was inevitable.

The Internet is dead. We killed it with ads.

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

The above image is from me just trying to look at a butternut squash soup recipe.

We've all encountered this website before. We're just accustomed to it.

However, it's really gotten to the point in time where you can't even argue that anyone is getting what they want.

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

I got the recipe eventually.

I spent 5 minutes getting bumped around, enraged at pop ups--yes pop ups too over top of 75% of screen real estate...

How is it possible that anyone is happy with this exchange?

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

There are 4 parties in this exchange:

  1. me
  2. the website
  3. the advertiser
  4. the ad platform

I'm clearly annoyed.

The website is having to stuff multiple different ads to make it profitable. The advertiser is getting their brands associated with an incredibly negative experience. The ad platform is getting an absurdly low click through rate.

I can't see how anyone is "winning" in this situation.

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@danielquinn yeah, I don't need a solve. I normally use a browser with an ad blocker....I just briefly got to experience what a normal person experiences.

Code is easy. People is hard. Doing any meaningful code requires people. So code becomes hard.

does anyone else remember when "memes" with less obnoxious graphic design were called "allusions"

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph yes, but I'm over 30...so you know, I'm an old person too...when can I yell at a kid to get off my lawn?

I got a fever…and the only prescription is more tail call optimization.
