Deliberately eclectic.

I like making stuff with code and getting people to come along with me. Things are more fun with friends.

🤔 My writing well has run dry, and I'm looking for some low-hanging fruit in case anyone has an idea of a topic you'd like to hear from me.

Some level of ask me a question might be a good fit if you have one?

@webology I dare to you to write about how software engineering is like college basketball. 🏀

I can see no correlation whatsoever. Hence the dare. 😈

🤔 I remember when Google used to stand for the best search on Earth.

🔥 It took them a few decades to erode into a SPAM and content farm search engine, but they have no one here to blame but themselves.

🛑 I stopped using Google and Chrome as my default search engine and web browser last year.

⏳ I'm actively unwinding my Gmail, Docs, and Meet (whatever it's called this year) usage down to a few orgs.

One of the issues I have with the movement is that I see no point in retirement, as it's traditionally viewed, the cessation of work.

Instead I have the view of "how do I move up the timeframe to do the work I want to do"?

Is there an acronym to describe this kind of lifestyle?

@matthewskelton Yup! Definitely a key question!

On shell config, I rock zsh...I compared my recent config to a 2 year old copy.

They looked almost nothing alike.

It's stuff like this that makes hesitant to carefully curate a set of dotfiles.

Figured it was worth mentioning some of the standard tweaks+tools I do whenever I setup a new system 🧵

MonitorControl, because I like to be able to control the brightness and sound of my monitor from the MacOS: https://github.com/MonitorControl/MonitorControl

I've set my middle mouse click to mission control for the past decade or so. And I'm not going to stop now.

Really Atlassian? You couldn't come up with ANY better product name for a collaboration product than "Databases"?

> A new way to track and connect work

> Your team admin gave you access to the newest tool to organize and track information – Confluence databases. With databases, you can efficiently access, manage, and update your work across Confluence, from any page.

I don't believe in vast conspiracies or even those with like a few dozen people inside large organizations or big corporations or governments.

Why? Because I've sat in the room now several times with some C-Suite or VP or Director person, and they tell me things they shouldn't be telling me. It's not that they're dumb, it's that they're people too. They're dumping or oversharing or just wanting to be liked.

raiderrobert,
@raiderrobert@mastodon.social avatar

And all it takes is one of them to say something they shouldn't have to one person, and they gossip mills go wild with the news.

So yeah, vast conspiracies are hard because people are involved. Big surprise. I know 😅

"Legacy" video games. Implement the concept of playthroughs permanently changing the global initial game states. I'm thinking of things like mechanics being locked away until you die and then you get to start a new game with those mechanics unlocked.

Are there any implementations anyone can think of?

You can tell that much of the tech punditry has never worked in retail, online retail, or had to pay the bills by selling things online. 😑

@baldur quite the statement! Who is included in tech punditry? And how have they revealed their ignorance?

I'm sick and tired of biz people calling changes with unknown outcomes "experiments."

If it's an experiment, you need things like an idea of what your independent and dependent variables are, a control group, preferably some prediction of the expected outcome, and measurement too.

If you're not doing those things, you're doing random crap and putting a respectable name over top.
