Ok just saw this...

Pythagorus theorem but with regular hexagons not squares.

Took me a second, but obviously it is true, as area of a regular hexagon is just a constant times the square.

Cool though.

"The area of the equilateral triangle* of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the equilateral triangle* of the other two sides. *:any regular polygon"

@Crell I mean one of my first jobs was fix something where the only code was a literal assembly printout, somewhat faded, and a file for the binary that got burned to an EPROM. I had to patch in a jump to a separate bit of code I put in a spare bit of space and then back in to the right place.

LOL, no, not remotely comparing to what NASA did. It was a tote machine, and I could change the EPROM if I screwed up.

NASA are awesome

Fun bit of “throw the new guy in the deep end” though.

If you get a machine with one of the new m4 apple processors do NOT type “dnl” or you will break the cpu.

So, is it something like this?

Dear ICO,

I understand that under new rules, as the operator of a social media platform, I have to advise you how I check the age of my user. I have used two methods.

  1. Looking in the mirror and seeing I look well over 18.

  2. For around 55 years I have meticulously counted the number of birthdays I have had, that number being 60, which is more than 18. I did rely on my parents to confirm the first few.

I trust you find this meets the requirements.

Lots of news reports about the online safety bill today, with attention on the part of children requiring age verification to use social media apps.

The reporting is somewhat misleading - for this to work everyone will be required to submit to age verification.

So why aren’t the headlines “ID docs required for social media apps”?

I am realising, slowly, how much lingers, not just the effects of the following stroke. I am finally now starting to feel more myself, and this is over 7 months later. I still realise my right arm does not move when I walk unless I think about it. I am only just getting back to typing straight (well, almost as well as I did before). This is hard work... So not to be taken lightly by anyone.

@miyuru It is so weird that I had a "good weekend" coding, and that is so unusual I notice it.

This used to be every day.
I used to do this all the time.

I can only hope I am working slowly back towards normality.

I also noticed the old debugging while I sleep. Waking and realising edge cases, and tests, and making notes for the morning.

Not quite at the "fuck that code really needs fixing and I'll doing that now, at 2am" that used to happen, not yet.

It is so fucking insidious how Facebook in particular has tricked business owners into thinking a Facebook page or Instagram is a proper substitution for an actual website. There is a crochet designer I love, but she is ONLY on Meta products, which means I CANNOT SEE YOU BECAUSE I DO NOT GO THERE.

Fucking leaving money on the damned table because you refuse to make an actual site.

Bad business, that.

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@TheJen who owns images has to be a fun one.

Even if Facebook claim you grant them a licence, you still “own” them as you are the copyright holder and can make copies and grant more licences.

But what I always wondered is what happens if they were not your pictures. No amount of contract with FB would actually enable you to grant FB a licence. How do FB know which images they actually have a licence to use and which they do not?

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@indrora @TheJen Indeed, I see why.

But if the person uploading does not have the copyright, then they can't grant facebook even those rights, no matter what facebook put in their contract, can they?

If someone else uploads one of my images to facebook, then the uploader AND facebook are in breach of my copyright, are they not?

Banks sending me emails: this proves absolutely nothing and you surely know it. Please stop!

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@dflite @patscullion @aaisp It addresses one small level of spam - the random emailed junk mail which could not sensibly quote your postcode or even get the right bank. They don't care about bank as some will be right, but postcode would not be a sensible thing to randomly guess.

But it must be increasingly the case that junk mailing and spam mailing lists will be able to have some associated data like a postcode.

Or, dare I say it, AI could find a load of details for each "mark"?
