I'm trying to decide whether or not to stick with my current rsync based backup strategy now that I have a home lab or if I should use something like borg.
On one hand I know how to use rsync locally. On the other, I could do both my remote and my local backup with borg and just use one tool.
@thelinuxcast I'm in the process of reinstalling some machines. I don't really have time to do it all in one sitting so I started a Borg backup with an external usb disk. I like the "repo" nature of it. I can be lazy and still work with the system and update the backup again later if I've new files in my home. And eventually I'll do the wipe and fresh install. The UI is very straightforward. And it's clear when I last backed up etc. So it's a definite improvement on rsync that way. It's fast too
A perennial viral complaint I've seen on FB, reddit, etc., for ~5 years is parents saying that kids the same age as their own kids have weird/ridiculous/bad names.
The comments of these posts are full of people saying things like "don't these parents realize how stupid these names are? Not like my kid, who has a normal name like Gary". But if the complaint is that almost all kids in the class have a "weird" name, aren't these "weird" names going to be normal for the kid and the kid's peers?
@danluu Sorry but "Dorcas" is just cracking me up. I hope the family name is "Malorkus". But I get your point - it's a bit infantile to make fun of someone's name. It'd be nice if the spelling was a bit more uniform though. I don't mind if your name is Tyrion but please spell it in the proper Lannister English.
One year ago, I started a bi-weekly nerdy podcast with a few friends called Linux Matters. The goal was to make a show for our wider circle of Linux nerds who like to hear what we've been up to every couple of weeks. We just released episode 27, where we read and discussed feedback we've received since we last looked in the 'mailbag'. 🧵
@thelinuxcast I'm not overweight myself but my doctor recommended walking 1hr a day for my back pain. 100% relief within a week. It's amazing.
What helped a lot was audiobooks. You get sick of podcasts after a while. With audiobooks, you're more keen to get back out there to continue a good story. In bad weather, Audible's Moby Dick was great! Felt like I was in the squall! 🌊
I don't have a good keyboard. Don't get me wrong, it's working fine. I bought it in July of 2019 for $24 American and it's still perfectly functional. It's a Reccazr, which I've seen good and bad reviews for. Lately it's become more and more noticeable to me that the little tabs on the F and J keys that help touch typists find home row have worn completely down to nothing. I'm tossing around the idea of just replacing the keycaps since the keyboard still works fine. Or a new one?
@mike You should get a good keyboard. This is a tool you use for hours a day. Like good underwear, it should be comfortable, not just fine. Doesn't have to cost a mint, but per unit time, money shouldn't be the only deciding factor.
Dear UI designers and coders - please, I beg of you, stop with the 1-pixel-wide mouse cursor grab zone at window borders. As monitor resolution gets bigger those damn pixels get smaller. Grabbing the edge of a window gets MUCH harder unless you EXPAND the size of the grab zone. #UXDesign
@jsgjames on many Linux desktops and window managers, simultaneously holding the Alt key anda mouse click helps. Hold(Alt+Right_click), then drag mouse to resize window
Hold(Alt+Left_click) then drag mouse to move window
@thelinuxcast man, I don't know why you're doing this to yourself. It's like "I'm going to try prison for a couple of months". At least prison might have a chance of exceeding your expectations.
Some time in the next year, I will likely have to transfer my :opensuse: install to another SSD. This one is going to get full. I never thought I'd fill a 2TB NVMe, but it's getting there.
@scheidegger@LukasBrausch@kellybodwin pokylux is great. I've given a few presentations made with it already. It's very usable even though both it and typst are quite young
@thelinuxcast I like it! Especially the volume knob. Not sure what I'd do with those giant buttons though. Maybe the software would run with proton? A VM at worst. How often do you think you'd change the special functions?
@kev don't forget the Cybertruck. So in full it's S3XY Cybertruck. Because for the longest time Elon has secretly wanted to make love to Optimus Prime! #robosexual
Do you ever feel like you talk too much but then you check in / ask and ppl insist "no, no you don't talk too much."
Or maybe the opposite question, how do you know when to shut up?
Is it weird to constantly stress about being annoying, then, not even have the validation of anyone agreeing you are in fact annoying? And of course maybe you really are, but they are just too nice to say?
@mairin ask a Dutch person. And ask them to respond as they would to another Dutch person. They tend to be frank. But you have to take the answer at face value. So if they say "maybe a little too much", that doesn't mean "you never shut up".
In 2023 does IBM / Red Hat not have a professional PR team that could engage online, and not just this angry loon who seems to be constantly tweeting while tired and emotional? Take his phone away for a day, please.
There's a pretty good chance I'll be going back to :fedora:. I like :opensuse: a lot, I really do, but zypper's update mechanism is so slow. Even changing the mirrors doesn't help.
I've thought about scheduling a zypper refresh via cron or a script or something just so that when I go to install something I don't have to wait for 7 repositories to refresh.
Arch also has this problem, but their mirrors are fast and the time that it needs to check seems to be longer.
And I found a thing called kitti3 that works to make Kitty into a dropdown terminal/scratchpad.
Works with Sway.
Does not work with Hyprland.
This right here is why Wayland pisses people off. There is no standard, so everyone does things in a different way, so there is no cross-compatibility. It sucks.
@thelinuxcast is it not helpful somewhat that both sway and hyprland are based on wlroots ? Or do we need to sit down with the kde and gnome folks too to hash out a standard?
