Seabirder in north east England, working to improve the lot of our coastal birds, particularly large gulls.

RSPB Species lead for Herring Gull, but my posts here are entirely my own opinions

me: "have you contacted the airfield for permission to fly drone in their restricted zone?"
colleague "Oh you don't have to, there's a warning on the drone but you can just click OK and carry on flying"

Why do Olympic curling stones cost so much? A trip to Ailsa Craig with Kays of Scotland, who have the only licence to cut the rock, quarrying the granite, and then transporting it to Newton Stewart for working into Curling Stones

Death Of A Miner - 1968 documentary by Phillip Donnellan of mining and a local family, the Elliotts of Birtley. I've only had a skim through but looks really interesting, I will have a proper watch this weekend

@christianp isn't it amazing! I know of a larger open Nature Reserve using to to work out where people are going and therefore the best place to put information and things

Ooh, Ilderton Station's for sale (it's the one on the A697 between Powburn and Wooler). If anyone has half a mil for a novelty house.

@paul_edwin I love spotting the old rail line when I drive that route. There's another big station behind the old Bridge of Aln pub (shut in 2015 https://pubheritage.camra.org.uk/pubs/3016), Whittingham Station, although it's a bit harder to see

Objection to public rights of way in woodland near Brampton - because they weren't used during Foot & Mouth, they weren't in continuous use so cannot now be declared Rights of Way.

Not a great news article but lots of legalese about what's required for paths to become rights of way.

Killing with Kindness - trichomonosis, a parasitic disease that is easily spread at bird feeders, is wiping out finches with chaffinches down by a third and greenfinch by 67% between 2008 and 2018.

https://www.birdguides.com/news/uk-chaffinches-hit-hard-by-disease/

Bird feeders also negatively impact Willow Tits, by increasing populations of Blue Tits over winter, who can then out-compete them for resources.

I liked this bird seed packaging designed by a student, and then noticed the brief was to take a cheap supermarket product then change the packaging so they can charge twice the price, so real prep for the real world at least
