In March of 1997 WIRED Magazine published their cover story on how browsers might soon disappear as everyone would prefer stuff pushed to them instead of discovered via following links.

It was widely panned and browsers are still very much alive today but I have to say when I look at Instagram and TikTok, those are all-Push content apps and maybe WIRED got it a little bit correct?

LB: I think about this a lot, especially with services like BlueSky. I just don’t see how you grow a network – to the point where access to that network is seen as valuable – with a paywall. Niche-focused networks like dating sites have this figured out, but how do you do it for the commons? And how do you do it without falling into the engagement-at-any-cost flywheel? Maybe you just don’t.
