Mac homebrew users might wish to check their version of xz; mine was 5.6.1 (one of the affected versions).

brew upgrade xz

will return it to 5.4.6

Here are some great tutorials on using Nix with R versions. Thank you @brodriguesco

https://www.brodrigues.co/tags/nix/

and videos, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3t83-2aNwY

I just tried getting started with and despite the great systems crafters material provided by @daviwil on Guile, found installation of Nix was much easier, and seems to have more up-to-date package ecosystem than Guix.

Worth a look @lgatto

p.s. nice to see you using ESS Bruno 🙂

yes, the +100 reason attracting me to guix is guile. Nix language is a headache for sure.

hi Bruno,
thank you for making the video showing the httpgd package. I managed to get a proof-of-concept for using httpgd to view plots directly within Emacs, rather than using a web-browser.

https://github.com/sje30/ess-unigd

I still think the httpgd solution within a web browser is neat, and probably more useful for now than Emacs, but this was an itch I've had for ESS for many years.

I added some installation notes if you'd like to try it:

Guess what... our 3 year deal with Elsevier expires at the end of 2024.

The bad news: there is an optional 1-year extension baked into the contract. If you have the energy, lobby your local library to ask them not to simply renew. Here's what I wrote to my librarian:

Do you create PDF documents using Quarto? Currently using LaTeX but curious about this new, fast and easy to use thing called Typst?

Read my latest blog post comparing using Quarto with LaTeX vs Typst to make pretty looking PDF documents! 👀

@nrennie nice post, thank you.

I also have been exploring it -- liking very much the fact that it is very responsive. Agree with the concern about math typesetting.

@scheidegger had a nice talk too with a great title!

@daviwil @sqrtminusone

oh no, sorry to hear this.

Curiously, I was wondering if anyone in the systems crafters world had much experience with mini pcs? are any of them much more useful in this regard?

sje,
@sje@fosstodon.org avatar

@daviwil @sqrtminusone

me too. Am thinking of trying out guix and having a little fresh machine would be good.

sje,
@sje@fosstodon.org avatar

@lgatto @daviwil @sqrtminusone

would something like this be a good choice? (I know very little).

Compatibility with Guix is high on my list. as is quiet.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/MeLE-Quieter-4C-Alder-Lake-Full-Functioned/dp/B0CP3YL6J7/?

currently on sale for 250 pounds seems like a good deal.

sje,
@sje@fosstodon.org avatar

@daviwil @lgatto @sqrtminusone

ah, showing my ignorance, does guix do a lot of rebuilding (like Gentoo from the old days)?

sje,
@sje@fosstodon.org avatar

@daviwil @lgatto @sqrtminusone
got it.

perhaps I'll wait for a beefier. machine. Am keen to try guix.

Yeah, so turns out if you just graft a scheme interpreter onto a Wayland desktop, the entire concept of workspaces can be removed from the codebase and re-implemented in the config / "user space".

@lhp

hi,

is this part of a project to write a wayland wm in guile? I'm hoping to explore dwl-guile and riverwm over the holidays.

Thanks for your guides to riverwm by the way, I think I'll be referring to them a lot during my testing.
