Isn't it weird that acceptance rate is a thing we look for in a conference/journal?

Publishing a paper should not be competitive like "we take the top 20% paper", it should be "we take all papers that are good enough according to our standards". Sometimes it can be a very low or very high number depending on the quality of the paper submitted.

@TEG @academicchatter @phdstudents

I would guess there is some pressure for competition forced by neoliberalism yes, but also some historical debt.

When you have a print you cannot accept an unlimited amount of paper so you create artificial competition (fix number and not % in this case). But the cost is now marginal to host a PDF on a web server and cannot justify it anymore.

Hey, just created a group about

@typst

It works like any other (self descriptive)

For example I would be interested in discussing the (hopefully) upcoming implementation of CSL

ASSESSING INTEREST: Do you work in gov, law, education, critical infra, biometrics, or are self-employed? Would you use AI in your role if it worked well? Interested in helping to explain what would it mean for the system to work well? If YES 👇

@mmitchell_ai Please don't force people to use google services if they want to interact with you. There many good reasons to not want to sign their terms of services and give away personal data.

You can use free and open source alternative, run by non-profit organizations with a great track record like https://framaforms.org/abc/en/ :)

edit: I mean, you of all people, should be receptive to this kind of issues 😁

Nobody told them about the title?

The goal of this post is clearly not to bully them, I just find it funny and surprising (whether it is intentional or not).

And I don't understand how can the T be after the R according the first letter of each word.

Super-naïve question:
I have a very simple personal website (jacopobertolotti.com), written manyally in html, using a free css template, and hosted on github.
Is there a noob-friendly way for me to include formulas (ideally using #LaTeX/ #TeXLaTeX) in the webpages?

solalnathan,
@solalnathan@sigmoid.social avatar

@j_bertolotti I would recommend KaTeX (https://github.com/KaTeX/KaTeX) over MathJax for various reasons (much bigger open source community, more up to date and maintained, faster).

And I would also advice to self host the library instead of using a CDN, especially Cloudflare because monopoly and centralisation is bad (that is partly why we are on Mastodon I guess 😁 )

@solalnathan@sigmoid.social avatar

@j_bertolotti Also I can also suggest https://github.com/uetchy/math-api (much more niche) if you want to have a solution that works without JS (which is a great solution in my opinion). Having a simple SVG file pre-generated on your website makes more sense that asking the end user to regenerate it each time.

Can "normal people" use OpenStreetMap?

Let's find out - this week on the podcast we chat with Roman Tsisyk, one of the makers of Organic Maps @organicmaps, the most popular OpenStreetMap-based mapping app.

@geomob @organicmaps curious to know on which statistics is based the "most popular" part. I had in mind that OsmAnd was older and more established but maybe OrganicMaps managed to catch up?
