5k Eritreans estimated to flee EACH MONTH & 22% of asylum seekers arriving in Europe were Eritrean, 2nd only to Syrians even though the latter have 6x the population of Eritrea.

This is 8 years ago. Things have only gotten exponentially worse.

Its also illegal to leave the country with a shoot to kill policy at the border if you're caught. Still people would rather risk that than the alternative of staying.

I’m just thinking about how some of the biggest genociders in the 20th and 21st centuries have gotten Nobel peace prizes. 🤔

I kind of see it more as a warning label at this point.

Friends, I haven't read the Chuck Schumer "report" on AI. Why should I? I knew where it was headed by seeing who they invited (and when they tried to invite me as a back fill/window dressing) & the fact that he asked people what their "p(doom)" was shudder. My whole life is not centered around commenting on what all these ridiculous people are doing. For that, I've written a very detailed paper with Emile P. Torres that you can refer to. Find it and other resources at https://dair-institute.org/tescreal/.

@timnitGebru@dair-community.social avatar

They keep on wasting our times with all this. We knew this was what it was going to end up in. Did you see who was invited and what their topics were? The senator referred to "god like AI." Him and his likes are 100% captured by the TESCREALists which should tell us what policy they would come up with.

Those of you in the US please make your voices heard. If you don't think this impacts you, best believe it will get to you one way or another.

"Tell your U.S. senator to oppose H.R.6408 and S.4136, Orwellian bills that would authorize a single official in the Treasury Department to strip any nonprofit organizations of their tax-exempt status without any accountability, justification, or due process. This bill was meant to target pro-Palestinian charities and nonprofit organizations and could be easily weaponized to target any nonprofit organization the President finds objectionable."

The vengeance by these universities is so evil. I heard that MIT suspended more than 24 students, with a bunch of them one week before graduation, so they don't know if they'll graduate. Evil.

Another festival is coming celebrating the 33rd "independence" of Eritrea. Because Eritrea's current condition is the epitome of independence. As the Eritrean minister of (dis)information notes, every festival celebrating PEACE in any diaspora community obviously has one very important component, always, and that is the presence of a genocidal army 👇

My deep appreciation for David Yambio and the whole @refugeesinlibya crew. What you see publicly is not even 5% of what they do. May they get the resources and support they deserve. No one should see the daily horrors they see and experience with zero care from the world.

Utterly ridiculous from the Pulitzer Prize committee today.

This Pulitzer citation supposedly honoring 🇵🇸 journos doesn't actually do so.

"Journalists & media workers covering the war in Gaza" includes everyone, Palestinian or otherwise.

The citation fails to mention the nationality of the journalists who "died" (euphemism which downplays the worst recorded journo slaughter), or the identity of their killers, the Israeli army.

Please compare with the 2022 citation for 🇺🇦 journalists.

The 2024 Pulitzer Prize Winner in Special Citations and Awards Journalists and Media Workers Covering the War in Gaza In recent years the Pulitzer Board has issued citations honoring journalists covering wars in Ukraine and Afghanistan. This year, the Board recognizes the courageous work of journalists and media workers covering the war in Gaza. Under horrific conditions, an extraordinary number of journalists have died in the effort to tell the stories of Palestinians and others in Gaza. This war has also claimed the lives of poets and writers among the casualties. As the Pulitzer Prizes honor categories of journalism, arts, and letters, we mark the loss of invaluable records of the human experience.

@ZekuZelalem Pulitzer, Nobel, add to prizes we should make meaningless and not give them t their prestige.

Does anyone remember an analysis from way back in the day that showed that the term “neural networks” was associated with the least likely papers to be accepted to NeurIPS? Like the term highly correlated with paper rejections, before everything became deeplearning?

In this @AJEnglish analysis by Shola Lawal, Raesetje Sefala discusses what she has found through our spatial apartheid research.

"Raesetje Sefala, a researcher at...DAIR, said her organisation has observed that townships are still expanding. “They continue to resemble their appearance during the apartheid era, indicating that similar small land sizes are still being allocated,” she told Al Jazeera."

Seeing organizations whose leadership has been asked for simple apology and accountability from Palestinian leadership of organizations who have worked on this for decades (who they have shamelessly been dismissing), and doing everything they can to sidestep that call instead of doing the simple thing of apologizing and creating accountability structures. Interesting logic 🤔
