Tbh, policing of criticism of the Israeli government and their ongoing colonialist genocide of the Palestinian people has been so profoundly pervasive and oppressive in Canada (and US, Germany, and other countries), at least the half year or so, that I consider Chow’s comments and non-participation pretty courageous and commendable actually. Like you, I certainly would have liked a more principled stance that explicitly denounces genocide, but given the almost absurd level of censorship and whitewashing that’s been going on, I think she’s perhaps saying and doing as much as she can. It’s clear to me that this is much larger than her. I’m glad she’s mildly voicing dissent about the flag-raising at Toronto City Hall. It’s a @#$%ing travesty

Coming to terms with no longer having privacy and control over my technology

I miss the days of VHS and DVD shelfs in homes, for example. If you bought the tapes and had them in your home, no corporate entity could alter those tapes without your consent, monitor how many times you watch them, sell your data to whomever they please without your knowledge, roll out new mandatory conditions to a ‘user...

Another problem caused by greedflation: companies want to collect both money and data for every usage

So true. As others have remarked on here, entshittification really changes the calculus of “is piracy worth it?”

It’s great to hear that Miez is on the mend (recovering). !

It sounds like with her trust and safety with you, and her braveness, she’s a very cooperative and well-adjusted cat patient, which must make things a little easier on you

I like the title picture. If she authored a book and there was a picture of the author on the back, that one would work well. If I’m not mistaken, I think that’s her in the same cat hammock in the reddit cats photo that you posted in a comment

That’s got the be among the best painting names out there. A very nice work itself too

An appearance of solidarity with a government committing colonialist genocide. Just what I want to see from my municipal government /s 🤮

Gross! Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

When I think of Tim Hortons, I think of how I’ve seen the disappearance of reusable flatware and cutlery from such a large proportion of eating establishments, and the normalization of eating-in with exclusively single-use disposable stuff (usually plastic), in about two decades. Future generations will thank us /s. But it’s those effing ‘woke lids’ that are the real problem /s. Also, who cares about Tim Hortons if you don’t like it; it’s not even Canadian. Do conservative voters just need a daily dose of misplaced resentment and rage to keep them going?

Paper straws do suck though.

I’m in Toronto, and I believe the city has banned plastic straws. I think plastic straw bans tend to be harmfully distracting from the larger issues. (To be clear, I think we have a massive plastic pollution problem.)

I was in a Hawaiian cocktail bar in Toronto recently, where the drinks are made to be drunk with straws and half of the people at the table asked for a second straw halfway through their drinks as the paper straws had stopped working well

We should be selling and marketing bring-your-own reusable plastic straws, with a small washable traveling case and a cleaning brush, maybe 4-packs

I think that is a really American thing though. I have never been to a place that had plastic cutlery and single use flatware.

Interesting! Care to provide your province and urban/rural? I live in downtown Toronto and unless there’s waiter-to-table service, there’s nothing reusable except glassware in bars and potentially plastic cups for free water. Other Torontonians, please chime in if you’ve seen anything different. Most places don’t ask “to stay or to go?” any more, or if they do the only difference is a bag

I think I understand how you’re feeling. It sounds like you experienced two fraudulent vegan meals from two separate sources you trusted very close together in time. It’s disgusting, and wondering if there’s something systemic going is human nature.

Outside of this, I haven’t experienced or heard of any new forms of vegan malice. I do think these incidents are probably attributable to incompetence. Some non-vegans see vegan diets as more akin to food preferences than food allergies. I’ve worked in restaurants. It’s a surprise more things don’t go wrong.

I empathize with you, exchanging a vegan recipe for a meat-containing one with no change in packaging for a pre-packaged food item is utter BS. I think you should name that company and possibly contact them.

I would understand if these two companies have permanently lost your trust. I know I monitor my trust in different places I eat on an ongoing basis (usually takeout where I see some of the food prep). All-vegan places are great. In non-vegan places, some are very respectful of vegans and others aren’t. I’m very watchful for cross-contamination that I can see, and I listen to my stomach afterwards for signs of ingesting something unwanted. If getting a safe meal is effortful or questionable, I won’t go back; it’s not worth it to me. I’m fortunate to live in a big multicultural city and can perhaps be more choosy because of it

That is perplexing. Have you contacted them to ask them about this? If it is new ownership, for example, that’d probably help you understand what happened and whether or not you want to try eating there again

How disappointing and shameful. It’d be nice to see our country on the right side of history

TTC can be very frustrating at times. 30 minutes stuck on a train between stations is dreadful. I hope you never experience that again and future commutes are better

An “an anonymous source says” article (i.e., deliberate leak to the press; standard sports industry practice). Toronto, the WNBA’s 14th franchise, is expected to start play May 2026 and play at Coca-Cola Coliseum, an 8,000-seat arena at Toronto’s CNE grounds which is home to the Marlies and where Toronto’s Professional Women’s Hockey League franchise is currently playing its first playoff series. An official announcement is expected May 23rd

Community moderation and discussion

Greetings Blue Bird aficionados. We seem to be without our good friend and moderator, @imasnyper, this season. I’m thinking I might ask the lemmy.ca admins if they’ll add me as moderator to this community, as I’d like to update it and have it look more active. It might take me a while to figure out how Snyper set up the...

I think you’re onto something.

Many commentators don’t see this as a new season, but as an extension of last season as the hitting issues are largely the same as last year’s. Re: changes to hitting coaches, they sent 1 coach (Dave Hudgens) down to AAA and they promoted Don Mattingly from bench coach to offensive coordinator.

I think either Blair or Barker mentioned this. Hitters who’ve just joined the Jays seem to perform pretty well compared to hitters who’ve been with the organization a while. Top 3 hitters by OPS+ ranked 1, 2, 3 (min 2 plate appearances per team games played): 2024: Davis Schneider, Justin Turner, Daulton Varsho (who was ice cold until he started working with his ex-MLB dad this season) 2023: Brandon Belt, Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Jays hitters suffer from two much information, which as Barker points out may be even more unhelpful when you’re already struggling (and prone to over-thinking). (We also know Vladdy is calling all sorts of hitting coaches outside of the organization; Bo’s been working with his ex-MLB dad lately.)

Watching the Phillies last night was something. They seem to have a simpler, see ball-hit ball approach. They pull soft, they push hard to the opposite field. Rough outing for Berríos.
