If we rewound to 2015, but with modern Apple Silicon and macOS on ARM (with iOS app compatibility), do you think Apple would have still forked the iPad lineup and featureset into iPad and iPad Pro, or would they have made different platform decisions? Would a touch-focused SpringBoard-style โ€™skin' or shell on macOS have been a better choice โ€” iPad in the streets, Mac in the sheets?

(My excuse is that for that cycle my development work was all about Apple Silicon and macOS 11, and this was primarily of use to SwiftUI devs on iOS)

I've already parted ways with watchOS (and my Watch doesn't even boot anymore, so that makes it easy), so I feel like I might be on the same path with iPadOS. I'll wait things out as long as I can on the 2018 Pro, but I feel increasingly misaligned with what I'm hearing about the platform's future. Any other year, news of larger model would have excited me. The idea of living in that world with Stage Manager as-is fills me with dread https://9to5mac.com/2023/04/30/ipados-17-rumors-new-features/

@overenginerd I don't even know what my answer is. I don't know if they were ever on track. It feels like we long since reached the 'destination' iPad was heading to, and Apple doesn't have a long-term goal or vision for the device to be anything more. It sounds like all of that attention will now shift to the headset

As somebody who was drawn to the hobby by the Tyranid models of the 90s, the new edition launch set of Warhammer 40K really does it for me. This is definitely the kind of refresh that aging model lineup needed. Can't wait!

We're enough years in to it now for me to be pretty sure SwiftUI is not the way forward for my apps, on Apple's existing platforms. It's just not how I want to write code. I remain open to it being potentially great for building new kinds of apps on Apple's headset, but Iโ€™m not holding my breath (nor perhaps do I need to write new kinds of apps if the old kinds are best). I hope there always remains a bigger, more-powerful alternative under the hood that I can drop down to to build better apps

Somewhere between January and today, Xcode โ€˜lostโ€™ all the automatic provisioning profiles for Pastel for Mac (and only Mac), and even when recreated manually on the dev portal they just aren't picked up during the submission process so I now have to choose the manual signing option ๐Ÿ‘€ No certs expired, so I'm kinda baffled

Incredibly specific PhotoKit question. Does anyone know what the PHAssetMediaSubtype value of 512 corresponds to?

I thought it was associated with RAW photos based on empirical testing, but I just found a counter example where it wasnโ€™t and now I'm totally stumped. It isn't listed in the documented types and no amount of searching has turned it up.

I'm trying to determine if a PHAsset is RAW without loading the full image, so alternative approaches for that would also be great.

@everyplace @patters I know Dice by Pcalc has an experimental RealityKit window but RealityKit is very barebones right now and doesn't have a whole lot going for it if you're not using it for AR specifically

Siri is becoming one of the key narratives of Apple's 2023, with a growing crescendo of stories about how a dysfunctional org, political infighting and an aging, inadequate technological base has left Apple excluded from the incredible advances we've seen with LLMs over the past year or two. Developers on other platforms are using Copilot to build their entire apps, where Siri can't even cope with multiple commands in one request. How critical of a strategic failure will this prove to be?

The field of โ€˜AIโ€™ in personal computing has always been so nebulous that it was hard to really demonstrate how far behind Siri was falling. However, I think it's clear that ChatGPT has given a benchmark that is so far beyond anything Apple is doing in public today that it's hard to see a path for them to continue doing the incremental minor improvements they have been โ€” the world has changed, and Apple has a lot of work to do. Add to this AI voice transcription & simulation, image generationโ€ฆ
