No mention of fusion energy at least at the top level of in BNEF's New Energy Outlook 2024 report, which is no surprise given its unproven abilities. But at Commonwealth Fusion Systems, we're working hard to carve out a big wedge alongside solar and wind for zero-carbon electricity. Our first machine is under construction, and we want to put power on the grid in the early 2030s. https://about.bnef.com/new-energy-outlook/

In MacOS, I often take a screenshot, right-click on the thumbnail that pops up, then select "Save to Clipboard." I've been doing this for years but still have to parse the words carefully. Why oh why doesn't it just say "Copy"? So much easier at least for my brain to grok. #UI

stshank,
@stshank@mstdn.social avatar

@mkoek That's smart though not sure it's for me — I'm about 50-50 saving it vs just using it fleetingly via the clipboard. How do you change that preference?

stshank,
@stshank@mstdn.social avatar

@nyquildotorg I dunno, it's what's been in the menu command for a few decades, no?

If you're good with social media and are psyched by the prospect of using zero-carbon fusion energy to fight climate change, good news — we're hiring someone to work with me and others at Commonwealth Fusion Systems. We're a startup, but we're not vaporware: our factory is cranking out superconducting magnets and our first tokamak is under construction. HMU if you're curious, but here's the job post.

So, hey, I just finished writing a novel. If you want to know what it's called and what it's about (and when it will be out), just follow this handy-dandy link right here:

@scalzi Oh no, now the song is playing in my head, and I can tell the situation will happen over and over again. Sci-fi authors should be prohibited from using this kind of growth hack.

I used to joke about my parents having a solar and wind powered dryer, because they used a clothesline. But now when I try that joke, people look at me blankly, thinking they have some renewables option checked on the utility bill. Bummer for my joke, but it died for a worthy cause.

@stshank@mstdn.social avatar

Using AI to oversee dynamic fusion machines is a hot area of research. It doesn't mean generative AI like ChatGPT. It's old-school AI, where you train a machine to recognize patterns in complex real-world data then let it make decisions.

iPad Pro reviewers collectively don’t appear to care enough about viewing the photos they’ve taken on their iPhones in HDR on iPad Pro. None of the reviews I’ve checked so far mention the use case.

For me, viewing the photos I’ve taken in HDR is the only thing that is enabled by the new iPad Pro and is not enabled by my current (not even M series CPU) iPad Pro that I particularly would like to be able to do.

Other things I wish my iPad Pro was allowed to do the new one doesn’t do, either.

stshank,
@stshank@mstdn.social avatar

@hsivonen Cascading HDR photo support through the software and hardware ecosystem is a pain. I'd think Apple would be keen on showing off this potential of its vertical integration but oh well. Still no HDR photo support in Safari, either.

    New power lines are a big deal for renewable energy. More grid interconnection means areas where it's sunny or windy can supply more juice to other areas, cutting back on the tragedy of curtailment. Also more resilience generally. https://www.energy.gov/articles/biden-harris-administration-announces-initial-list-high-priority-areas-accelerated

    Batteries are growing on the grid to handle evening power use surges when solar peters out. California just hit 7GW out of 10GW capacity. Our house is battery powered from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will be part of a virtual power plant soon.

    Today batteries help with daily peak shaving; longer gaps in solar/wind production are harder. could help with that but is only one part of the overall solution. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/07/climate/battery-electricity-solar-california-texas.html

    Big personal news: after 25 years at CNET, I’ve joined Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a startup developing zero-carbon power plants to help fight climate change. As head of content, I'll work to make knowledge of fusion mainstream as the technology proves itself worthy. Questions? Hit me up!
