Alright alright alright. I think I wanna look into a desktop mail client because having to open multiple browsers and tabs to check my email accounts is annoying.

What's a good recommend? I'm looking for things that leave a relatively low system footprint.

A male anime character blows on a hot beverage to cool it before drinking. They have brown hair and are wearing a white-collared shirt.

@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@drcaberry yeah but probably with a more open source/neutral vibe.

I was considering thunderbird but didn’t know if things had improved in the email world.

@majorlinux which one do you feel is best?

@majorlinux you use both?

@majorlinux since this is mostly a windows question, thunderbird it is.

@majorlinux this is not helping when you just said you use thunderbird on windows 😫😫😫

So when was purchased I joined Mastodon, Post, Spill, Spoutible and BlueSky. Post is going belly up on 5/31. I left Spill because of members policing the way I engage on social media. If I wanted to be critiqued and criticized in my downtime I could go read my course evaluations. Now spam complaints on Mastodon?? I may need to just delete everything except the dark place.

Maybe you can find the thief during all this

@karabaic @majorlinux Hi there. So in this article and the linked WSJ article, the only thieves mentioned are... actually thieves... who steal things from people. In this case, their phone. No subtlety required here. It's just "hey, this new feature is a theft-deterrent"

Also, if you're new to Major as a writer, he is often quite direct in his writing. No guessing required!

@majorlinux @jonobie I am happy to report that I do own this onesie! This is an art commission of me at a desk in said onesie.

Behold the author in said onesie.

You can find it on Amazon. Here's the one I have in this photo → https://www.amazon.com/SAZAC-Dragon-Kigurumi-Blue-Costume/dp/B073ZR25YH/ref=asc_df_B073ZR25YH

One thought I've had about the reporting and such with Gaza and everything is about 2014. That's about 10 years ago (it's less, but math is hard and time is a soup, so let's just round).

At that time, there was this wild obsession with finding "weapons of mass destruction" in Iran, North Korea, and other assorted places. /1

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@thisismissem I meant 2014 here because I thought that would be a time people had better access to, but like most things, it definitely goes back a ways.

In this case, there was DEFINITELY murmurs and other nonsense like this happening back in 2004, too!

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@thisismissem honestly same. I actually had to look things up for the specific reference. In this case 2014 was where they focused on those countries.

I'm an 80s kid and your comments makes me think about how much some war or another has been a part of my life from 5th grade and onward.

I'm 41 now. That's three decades. Why?

Here's your reminder that companies are really working against preservation of games.

Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS online services will shut down in April https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/4/23902615/wii-u-nintendo-3ds-online-shut-down

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux It's so frustrating. Like I get servers can't be forever, but surely there's a means of preserving the ability to play these games and they stay trying not to do that because... I don't even know.

Just want to make sure people are aware that some of the responses to generative AI can be somewhat ableist.

Some of us can't effectively communicate thoughts, even given enough time to try and craft the words.

Some of us to benefit from using generative AI to create something that can actually formulate two sentences together that don't feel like rambling.

I'm sure I could have used it for this post.

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux and while I am here, to your first point: this tech is currently being weaponized to hurt people, so like... what about them?

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux As I said before → "I can agree that there should be far more weight on people doing terrible things with the tech than the tech itself, tho."

I feel like we are clear on this?

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux Good luck on the search!

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux I'm assuming this wasn't said in sarcasm or dismissal → "I'd love to learn what other tools are out there that can do it at this scale."

And as such, I'm wishing you well on this search.

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux Fair enough. I don't disagree with this idea as a concept. Where I differ is in how I feel about this idea with things [as they currently are].

Especially because we have gone through a year of people going, "Y'all are overreacting and being oversensitive about bad actors doing things with this tool" only to have headline after headline after headline with all of that and then some happening.

I think you understand me here.

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux I don't disagree about things being well-regulated and then being made usable and useful to those of us that could benefit from it most!

But also: in that order of being regulated first.

And given our experience of trying to get reasonable regulations for this, people asking for it to all go away makes sense to me. Even if it is a particularly strong reaction, it's reasonable.

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux The difference here would be this tech being nascent and the many iterations of the Sonata in this example existing for nearly 100 years.

I'll also note here there is a difference between this thing we are talking about and the divide between "this benefits me greatly!" and "I cannot function without this" in the same way you might if you didn't own a car in an area of the country with minimal public transport options.

synxiec,
@synxiec@blacktwitter.io avatar

@majorlinux What of what I said sounded like that?

Also, we can note that something doesn't sit right with us without having an exact blueprint for exactly which other thing might.

Additionally, the alternative for feeding information against people's consent to an algorithm that then mimics their writing voice and art would be not doing that.

It seems this notion was a non-starter, so we're here.
