I post about a lot of things some of the time: culture, art, plants, casual gaming, my cat, weird little jokey jokes, rants against misogynoir and fascism, complaints about Texas, and more.

Header: Sleepy black cat.

29 years!!! 29 years of slightly bridled chaos! 29 years of talking shit! Yes I was also taking shit in baby language! 29 years! 29 years or me not knowing what the FUCK neurotypicals want outta me but pushing it right along! 29 years of my ancestors' wildest dreams! 29 years of living with plants!

You are all welcome I'm even here. I was like two weeks late, clearly my gestational form knew how ghetto it would be out here

BIPOC ARE NOT YOUR MORAL COMPASSES. GO READ A BOOK

@thiswomanswerk@blacktwitter.io avatar

A very funny gag here is many of the white people who spout social justice rhetoric yet only engage with BIPOC folks to scold or whitesplain them. Using the rhetoric makes them seem safe. At first.

Anyway, I'm ignoring them and working on nurturing mutually beneficial engagement with other folks of color, especially black, indigenous, queer and/or trans folks.

This is actually a huge adjustment for me because from the beginning here on Mastadon I've been the defensive against whiteness.

One thing I noticed while I was away was that I enjoy fb and Insta MUCH MORE than here. Probably because there's 1000% more black people, the disscussions are more diverse, and I don't have to worry about some random person asking me to share my research labor with them without compensation or even a real conversation (for example.)

Sure, there are racist/sexist/etc. assholes on there. But I'd curated my experiences pretty well, which is something that required a fair bit of labor on my part.

thiswomanswerk,
@thiswomanswerk@blacktwitter.io avatar

Starting out on fb and insta was different because I actually know most of the people I interact with and there is an ethic of care that doesn't really exist here.

From the very beginning, I have felt welcome, but only conditionally. Cat pics? Yeah! Puns? Great! But beyond that...

People have said some really nasty things to me on here, to the point that I started collecting these ugly statements into a "white hostility alert" hashtag until that became exhausting and unsustainable for me.

My field of study was deemed illegitimate. I was harrassed for making a Juneteenth reparations post. I was called fascist for requesting a bit of nuance about how we talk about ppl still using twitter. Those are just three examples. I have more.

Toni Morrison said the very serious purpose of racism was distraction and I really see that here. So much energy defending me from whiteness that I haven't had time to do the labor of curating my experience here--which is what you all say I should do.

thiswomanswerk,
@thiswomanswerk@blacktwitter.io avatar

It took me stepping away to process my emotions to realize that I was experiencing firsthand what black folk before me have written about. MLK and the white moderate and all that.

There are so many wonderful people here and we deserve better than cracker nonsense.

I will spend energy on those who deserve it from here on out.

Every election season I become more of an afro-pessimist.

Stop trying to force feed me crumbs from the floor.

thiswomanswerk,
@thiswomanswerk@blacktwitter.io avatar

"You won't have to eat floor crumbs your entire life, maybe just until you're 80 (if you make it that far)."

Deadass what y'all white liberals be sounding like. Sickening. Do better.

thiswomanswerk,
@thiswomanswerk@blacktwitter.io avatar

@cinnarose !! If your best argument is that you're not the other guy, then you're offering crumbs. It's lazy. Uncreative. Honestly laughable. I'll give it to the few that are trying but I'm pretty sick of these folks acting like it's unreasonable to expect to be treated like a full person and co-opting misinterpreted words to make themselves seem social justice literate at the same time. Probably the only appeal they would even (maybe) hear is: "I can't vote if this country kills me."

thiswomanswerk,
@thiswomanswerk@blacktwitter.io avatar

I don't want to be an afro-pessimist. I don't think Black feminists really get to be Black afro-pessimists. And I'm not one yet.

But lord if living in this country hasn't been one disappointment after another. My dad born in '55 and I compare notes like, "this shit look almost the same." And it's not helped by unnuanced liberals on the internet who would rather I shut up, vote, and emote their way than express any sort of complexity of emotion or attitude.

I'm gonna take a break from here.

As someone deeply attuned to the interlocking nature of structural oppression in the us, as someone who is at the bad end of multiple axes of oppression, I am am v much aware that black folks aren't the only ones who suffer in this hellhole.

So, if I make a post specifically mourning the loss of black life, there is intention behind that which ought to be respected.

Some of y'all are piggybacking off of my grief, which is not okay and y'all been muted.
