After you follow someone, they have this long to follow you back before you unfollow.

tim,

@anderseknert this is an alien and disturbing premise

I’m sure they were just standing their playground.

tim,

@OhNoSheTwitnt dateline on this is 2017; one can only pray we've reached a pax infanta in the meantime https://metro.co.uk/2017/01/04/a-toddler-has-now-shot-someone-every-week-for-two-solid-years-in-america-6360264/

I am curious. Do you currently have COVID?

tim,

@glyph I had the flu last week, which was novel.

i have an opportunity to upgrade from 100 Mb/s home internet to 500 Mb/s for an extra $5/mo or 1 Gb/s for an extra $10/mo. I think 500 Mb is probably worth it but my utility curve is already pretty flat tbh. How much internet can one man possibly consume

tim,

@glyph naively: what about steam makes you say that?

The phrase "millionaires and billionaires" always makes me wonder about the speaker's understanding of scale. Nobody ever talks about "thousandaires and millionaires" and that's the same degree of difference. If you really have to draw the line around a category, the vast majority of "millionaires" have more in common with the thousandaires than the billionaires.

tim,

@glyph "Top decile of the household wealth distribution" is, sure, meaningfully and importantly different from "top millionth," but the rhythm of the phrase is pleasant

This extension cord has been hanging down from our neighbor's balcony for a few days now. What's the funniest possible thing we could attach to it for them to find when they finally pull it back up?

I'm opposed to intellectual property maximalism; I think that IP policy should be managed primarily to encourage innovation and creativity, and only secondarily to benefit rightsholders. I think courts should find that training machine learning models on copyrighted materials is, in general, an instance of fair use, because it supports so many new creative possibilities, and that legislatures should clarify law where necessary to protect access to the commons.

"Reverse the loss"?!? We absolutely cannot accept this kind of nonsense.

tim,

@design_law Clark is such a creep.

“Still no promise of a cultural space for us. Still no senior homes.”

After nine years of rejections and protest, 105 Keefer condos have been approved — though with some design conditions intended to make the building more welcoming. Christopher Cheung reports.

tim,

@thetyee so glad this is moving forward! CoV has plenty of land across the street if the city wants to provide cultural amenities to the neighborhood.

grateful to a plumber, who I have agreed not to name, who disconnected the broken gas range in my new apartment, even though his firm isn't insured for gas work. Some delivery guys are showing up to haul the range away and deliver its replacement tomorrow. I tried to disconnect it last night and discovered that my wrenches were insufficient to the task, so he really helped me out!

tim,

Unfortunately the new range supports WiFi,

What sensible forward-thinking company wouldn't want to yoke their prospects to Google's messaging strategy, I ask you.

tim,

@mhoye the station ads on the DC Metrorail system are incidentally unreal, but the subject matter tilts towards defense contractors

A friend asked me to help build a time zone response item for a global audience for Google Forms, and I have plunged down the rabbit hole, and I have

  • learned a little bit more about time zone databases

  • realized that this is actually kind of hard if you're concerned about both usability and trying to avoid replicating colonial violence

tim,

i should have included the bonus instructive screenshot of a 10-year-old Firefox options dialog on a different platform

Learning about Playwright (https://playwright.dev/), a powerful tool for testing modern web applications, with an impressive demo from @sheena. Selenium can do all of this, but this seems a lot more pleasant and Pythonic. 😌

We're hearing about introspection in Python from @ucodery. Excited to discover inspect.getmembers(x) and inspect.getmembers(type(x)), which together tell you about all of the attributes of an object, even if they're slots, even if they're inherited, which I've somehow failed to learn about for years.

the city of vancouver council meetings website at https://covapp.vancouver.ca/councilMeetingPublic/ is designed with a fairly export-hostile UI toolkit, but here's a notebook that scrapes the table with Selenium: https://gist.github.com/tdsmith/60006dfc03cf63a5756c76048be8ad5e
